How can discovering an Asteroid Belt be responsible for more frequent strikes? Knowing its there doesn't increase the chances of a strike.

Re: NASA: The Discovery of a Previously Unknown Asteroid Belt Will Lead To More Frequent Strikes
NASA has released data showing that they expect at least 400 asteroid impacts on Earth between 2017 and 2113. Although most of the rocks have a diameter of 110 yards or less they have warned about a colossus that’s heading our way. The mega asteroid will encounter Earth in 2020. Can someone link to the NASA announcment of a new asteroid belt?
Or to the NASA statement that there will be 400 impacts between 2017 and 2113?
I didn't find any results (of course a lot of woo-woo sites pop up).

The original article was published by the british tabloid Express: [link to www.express.co.uk]

The author Nathan Rao is a crackpot, e.g. he wrote some time ago "SUPERMOON LIVE: Beautiful lunar event could trigger 'END OF DAYS'" [link to www.express.co.uk]

He apparently switched of his brain while looking at NASA asteroid data.
His phantasy scribble: "The terrifying predictions came as NASA revealed disturbing new data showing 400 impacts are expected between 2017 and 2113, based on new observational data of objects seen in space over the past 60 days."

The reality: Asteroid 2014 NZ64 has 399 near-Earth passes between 2017 and 2113.

Not a new asteroid belt - just one (1) new asteroid.
Not 400 impacts between 2017 and 2113 - just 399 passes between 2017 and 2113.

Impact risk on the Torino scale for all passes: 0
"Best" impact probability: 1.2e-07 = 1 in 8,333,000

I agree, more bullshit.

If they just discovered it, then that would not have any impact or increase.

We should have no difference in the amount of meteorites hitting earth compared to times in the past.

The strategy must be that as we cant see it, you can push any bullshit that people will believe.

All space research should stop receiving billions immediatley that tax payers could be using for personal bailouts or stopping wars.

I am giving up on viewing scientists as honest and respectable.

The thread title is bullshit yes, but it's not a claim made by NASA. It seems to have been invented by Chris Carrington of The Daily Sheeple, whose words you can take with as many grains of salt as you like.

Or MAVEN is just much more advanced with a larger, more capable scientific payload (65kg of instruments) whereas the MOM mission is inexpensive because it uses a pre-existing satellite bus modified for the trip to Mars and a small 15 kg payload of fairly standard scientific instruments and cameras that aren't anything particularly fancy. MOM is a technology demonstrator, it isn't designed to really push the boundaries of our understanding of Mars. It's primary mission objective was just to prove that they could get to Mars and manage the mission. MAVEN is designed to expand our understanding of Martian atmospheric loss using cutting edge technology, including the most powerful ultraviolet spectrograph ever sent to another planet, a small and efficient quadrupole mass spectrometer (only 8.8 kg in mass and pulling only 22.6 watts), and other specialized instruments. They're really apples and oranges. One is a Nokia 2600, the other is next year's Samsung Galaxy S6.

No. Let me put it in terms perhaps you can understand. NASA's MAVEN is to a Canon EOS-1D X as India's MOM is to a Vivitar point and shoot digital camera. One is cheap but sufficient as a starting point, the other is cutting edge. The price difference is likewise tremendous. MAVEN is designed to push the envelope both in terms of the technology used and the knowledge gained scientifically. MOM is designed to test their ability to go to Mars, that's about it. Actually getting there and recording images was considered a secondary objective.

No, it's like saying that the NASA probe is more advanced and has more equipment on board to carry out more experiments, and therefore it's not surprisingly also more expensive. Just saying 'this probe is more expensive than that probe so clearly it's a waste of money' is stupid. Might as well mock a professional photographer for buying an expensive camera to use rather than just using the camera on his phone.

Re: NASA: The Discovery of a Previously Unknown Asteroid Belt Will Lead To More Frequent Strikes
How can discovering an Asteroid Belt be responsible for more frequent strikes? Knowing its there doesn't increase the chances of a strike.

I couldn't have said it better. :) First thought that hit my mind when I read the article.
 Quoting: RantProne

The article is false. It's actually a bunch of BS based on one, singular small asteroid which has about 400 extremely remote chances for impact whose cumulative risk is about 1 in 476,000. It's way down on the list of potential impact risks.

Made me laugh so hard that:
$74m Cost of India's Mars orbiter
$671m Cost of Nasa's Maven Mars mission

Nasa overpricing everything so they can fund their black ops projects like complete lying scumbags as to be expected.

Yes.

Will be looking into it. Thanks for the link to spaceflight101. I bet that some parts on the satellite have a discusting overpriced % markup. Boeing is well known for doing this with standard nuts and bolts and toilet seats.

This is another way they do it with massively over inflated pay rates, so that they can justify where money went. Dodging tax etc.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62902264

The thread title is bullshit yes, but it's not a claim made by NASA. It seems to have been invented by Chris Carrington of The Daily Sheeple, whose words you can take with as many grains of salt as you like.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 63034898

Ahh ok, so that clears things up!

NASA needs to announce the truth about aliens, that would justify taking candy from the taxpayers.
