Hundreds of truckers to descend on Dover in protest against lax immigration controls

HUNDREDS of truckers are expected to descend on Dover tomorrow in a bid to blockade the port causing chaos for travellers to and from France. They are protesting at what they deem as lax border controls in Calais which allow stowaways to get into their lorries. The hauliers say they are being scapegoated for the problem of illegal immigration and forced to the brink of bankruptcy by unfair fines for unwittingly bringing migrants into the UK.

Kent Police are bracing themselves for the expected traffic chaos and possible trouble amid claims that far-right groups have hijacked the event.

There are growing concerns about the situation in Calais where around 1,600 migrants are camped out waiting for a chance to stowaway to the UK in lorries, cars and caravans. In the past few weeks there has been skirmishes between riot police and migrants trying to fight their way into the ferry terminal.

The inability of the French authorities to deal with the problem has led the immigrants to become ever more brazen.

A lack of detention cells means they know that even if they are caught trying to slip past border guards they will simply be released and given the chance to try again.
