What about how he got it?

Due to the timing, it could have been contracted anywhere.

Could have been caught in the US, on the plane or in Africa.

If he caught it on the plane, well, that is the worst case scenario ever.

This is where it will explode into an epidemic. We are not considering others around him when he caught it. What about people who were exposed near him? Being it could have been on the plane he caught it, that is very possible and no one official is considering it, yet it is a REAL possibility.

Probably already too late for the DFW patient anyway, but if I was potential patient #2 I'd be begging to start taking the above SNALP-formulated anti-ZEBOV siRNAs immediately. Unlike ZMAPP it can be manufactured relatively quickly, without needing to wait months for tobacco plants to grow. Unfortunately since the FDA stopped the phase I clinical trial, I seriously doubt they will administer it to any patients. I would personally be willing to take the risk if it were my skin on the line though.

No. It's not about smoking regular tobacco. It's about genetically engineering related plants to produce desired proteins, even antibodies. They use Nicotiana benthamiana for ZMAPP, not regular tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum). Nicotiana benthamiana is particularly susceptible to disease, which makes it less than ideal for big tobacco companies, but extremely ideal for scientists who can deliberately infect it with bacteria that are modified to carry genes of interest and thereby use the plant as a biological factory.

He pioneered the process of engineering the chloroplasts to produce the desired proteins, so that the transgenes could not spread through the pollen (among other reasons).

ZMAPP ran out a month ago and there will be NONE available till January 2015 and when that time comes around there will be only available a few hundred doses at MAX because this serum will never ever be able to be mass produced due to its nature. so all of you in the USA keep this is in mind, that your government will not be able to save you! what you need to do is not get ebola in the first place and right now that means wear gloves when going out in public and not going in near people within 3 feet of space.
