God doesn't rebuke Elijah for running away - instead he tells him he has some anointing to do:

Kings 19:15 And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria

The word has been translated "generation", biased toward popular belief. It can actually be translated "race", that is, the human race. If you look in your Bible at the word "generation" you will see a pointer to this alternative translation in notes at the bottom.

Also check out the equivalent passage in Luke 21:29b: "Look at the fig-tree and ALL THE TREES." If the fig-tree is Israel, then what is "and all the trees"?

The fig tree and all the trees is not Israel but the whole body of Christ and it is talking about SPIRITUAL fruit, not physical.

Here's a more accurate interpretation:

"The human race will not pass away until the whole body of Christ is in full bloom."

Jesus said what is it to us to know the times and seasons and that no one knows the hour or the day. He would be contradicting himself to then give something that could be calculated mathematically with the carnal mind.

Stop trying to figure it out, there is no countdown. Work out your salvation daily with fear and trembling and let times and seasons be The Father's business as Jesus said they were.

If you notice Jehu was anointed to be king over Israel.

Elisha was to be anointed and take the place of Elijah, eventually...

But first they were to have many adventures together.

The three people that Elijah anointed are connected in a prophetic series of events:

"To take over a role" is, as you said, to take a role that was previously occupied by somebody else, which seems to be what you're looking for, as your colleague "replaced" another worker, so he "took over" that worker's role.

What does it mean to take up the mantle?
