Let me be perfectly clear: Officer safety is *not* more important than the rights of the public. Don't like it? Don't be a cop. Want a 100% guarantee you'll go home safe at the end of your shift? Work a customer service job from home. Or be unemployed. I don't care. This idea what we should take an asswhupping to make you feel safe at work is bullshit. Stop and think, assholes ... why would a group of people EVER come together and say, "let's pool our resources and our collective will and empower a few of us to beat our asses and write us tickets."
