American cowboy finally gets his day
Today, the nation will observe the National Day of the American Cowboy. A resolution was passed last year by the U.S. Senate, and signed by President Bush, designating the fourth Saturday in July as the National Day of the American Cowboy.

This year the day will come and go with no fanfare. There are many people who have no idea that there is such a holiday, at least in the Northeast.

The contributions of the cowboy affect the entire country, not just in the West. It affects a large industry. Whether he be a cowboy on the range or a rancher, he affects our country and our economy. He affects our country in other ways as well with true cowboy values - call them the "code of the West" or "cowboy ethics".

This is why we need to honor the cowboy. So help swell the ranks, neighbors and let's make the National Day of the American Cowboy an event to make America take notice. God bless America and the American cowboy.

The American Cowboy is a national icon, well represented and celebrated in movies, television, and sporting events such as rodeos, and more. Senator Craig Thomas of Wyoming introduced a resolution to designate July 23rd, 2005 as “National Day of the American Cowboy.” The resolution spells out what it is to be an American Cowboy, the pioneering men and women who helped establish the American West, describing them as icons that embody “honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, respect, a strong work ethic, and patriotism”. Cowboys are not only a significant part of our country’s history and culture, but are an important aspect of our current economy.

The Senate passed the resolution on May 12th and encouraged Americans to observe the special day with appropriate ceremonies and activities to honor our American Cowboys of the past, present and future. The President has not yet signed the Senate Resolution.

American Cowboy magazine launched the campaign in 2004. Initially, the impulse arose from a dialogue between the magazine and its readers. On the occasion of its 10th Anniversary (May/June 2004) AC asked its readers for feedback on the question, "Why does America need the cowboy?" That dialogue led to two cover stories—"The Cowboy as Hero" (July/Aug. 2004) and "Five Westerners Who Changed America" (Nov./Dec. 2004)

Only a cowboy nation could have produced Will Rogers. And only Will Rogers could have done so much to lift the people of his place and time.
