The historical period dates back to the Great Plague of London in 1665 (bubonic plague) or even before when the first outbreak of the Plague hit England in the 1300's. The symptoms of the plague included a rosy red rash in the shape of a ring on the skin (Ring around the rosy). Pockets and pouches were filled with sweet smelling herbs (or posies) which were carried due to the belief that the disease was transmitted by bad smells. " [link to www.rhymes.org.uk] |

Buy lots of replacement filters. Generally when you're using them for vapors you change them when you start to smell the chemical. Maybe 4 hours use, since you can't smell Ebola. |

They say they are rated to deal with mold, anthrax and avian flu, so they're rated for bacterium, spore and viral. Cartridges are the ones with the half pink, half yellow stripe on the package. Do not use n95 paint mask or surgical looking. The cdc is recommending n95 but many healthcare workers have gotten sick anyway. N95 will not protect against airborne like p100 will. P100 offers way better protection. Also don't use the ones that look like p100 but are made for specific chemicals. The mask can usually be used interchangeably with the filters but you MUST use the p100 filters which are always or almost always purplish in color. |

In the context of Ebola, OV would be useful to block out the smell if you were going to be working with dead bodies. Go with the straight P100 filters and use the money saved to buy more of them. Hardware stores also charge way too much. Check them out on Ebay or Zoro.com. 3M 7500 series with 2291 or 2297 filters are about the best you can get before stepping up to full-face respirators. Combination Cartridge/Filters: Filters particles, gases and vapors. ^^plus, the paperwork that comes with the ov/ag lists avian flu...so it can handle viruses...the other ones aren't rated for it. |

Dace User ID: 14737377 United States 10/14/2014 04:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | P-100 means that the mask will filter out over 99% of the particles (That the cartridge is RATED for) So there are different 'levels' of P-100 cartridges/filters. A P-100 basic 'particulate' filter will filter out over 99% of dust, mold, & bacteria. A P-100 with black label will do the same, but is also rated for Anthrax and TB. The P-100 OV/AG are the only ones that are viral rated. |
Ready and Waiting User ID: 62110667 United Kingdom 10/14/2014 05:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Looks like panic setting in on lots of threads. I suggest putting it all in perspective first. Question - Are you working or like ly to work with an ebola patient If yes then full hazmat etc etc. If no then basic precautions will do. Buy cheap masks, say the type that has elastic to go round your ears and made out of a sort of fine cloth/paper. Will stop you inhaling sneezes etc.. You would use this in the worst case scenario when forced to go to the shop (if anything is left) or answer the door etc. By far the best thing is to avoid contact with the outside world if/when this really takes off. So say you go full hazmat for a trip to the shops. Firstly i reckon someone (police maybe) may shoot you as an hazard. Further, you are far more likely to bring home the contamination on the suit than breathing it in unless you are working closely to an infected, bleeding, shitting, coughing patient. You would need full decontamination systems as well. Family member gets ebola? Well i not a Christian but pray and help them. Full hazmat- not a chance. remember even in Africa its not a 100% kill rate and i am willing to bet many of us are immune or unlikely to get it even if we licked an infected person. As for numbers, anyone's guess. So my answer is get medical gloves and basic masks. AND if you can buy it, a BIG dose of luck. Ps. just bought 100 of each to top up stocks on ebay for £5.89 (About 4 dollars) Wishing you well and good luck Ready and Waiting |
