My wife is a nurse and we discussed what happens if she has to treat Ebola patients
My wife is a critical care ICU nurse on the west coast and last night we talked about the current Ebola situation in the United States.

A nurse with 10 years experience in critical care and 5 years of cardiac ICU experience, so 15 years total. She is in management and has been in meetings for most of the last week.....the subject has been Ebola and the lack of training and proper equipment to deal with an outbreak situation.

The hospitals in our area are scrambling to be prepared for the first patient if and when they arrive....which is going to be hard with flu season approaching as well. The conversation took a left turn when she said
" I have been thinking and I was talking to other people at work, if I have to treat a patient with Ebola I won't come home ! I don't want my family which I love to even possibly be exposed to something that might potentially kill them."

She then started to cry and said "it scares me that I could go to work and if I find out that I treated an Ebola patient and was exposed.... I would have to be quarantined and might never see my husband or son face to face again!" She went on to say that the likelihood of catching it is pretty low with all of the PPE (personal protective equipment) and decontamination procedures, but there is always a risk and that is what scares her.

So in the event of exposure, my wife will either stay in our home and my son and I will live at my Parents home or in laws home with only skype or FaceTime as our face to face communication.

This is a sad possibility....even a small chance of not seeing my wife again is heartbreaking when the whole current situation could have been prevented from getting any worse by stopping people in certain areas from entering our country. Ebola may have come here anyway but the current situation becomes increasingly dangerous the less precautions we take.

PPEs will only work if you have BOTTLED AIR.

OP ... I'm going to be totally honest with you ......... If this were my wife and my family i will tell you what i would do .... She could continue being a nurse untill that first Ebola person comes into the hospital ... At that point i would insist that my wife walk out the door and quit ...

No IF's and's or but's .......... That's it no more ... It would NOT be worth losing my wife over ... Money is NOTHING compaired to your wife and your family ..... If you love your wife as much as i love mine ..... I'd rather be broke and with her NOT have some money and lose her ..

Take it for what it is worth it's just my humble opinion.

She will have to quit and here is why.....you KNOW others in that hospital will quit. She will not be working in a proper operating hospital. She will be working with bare bones staff and panicking people on the verge of riot.

Not safe at all.

If you want to save the world, keep your children alive and healthy. However you can, which involves money and jobs these days.

I suggest you BOTH work and then let her get out of health care ASAP.

It should be a job for the young, strong in health and no kids to risk.

It might be one thing if we had a president and a government trying to do all they can do to keep this out of America and keep us safe .........

But it looks like to me they are doing all they can to import this virus ... Otherwise they would stop the flights coming out of those countries ...

No Way would i let my wife be put into danger and bring this virus home to my family when the people at the top do not have our backs ....... When and if this blows up and starts spreading after the decisions this president and our government have made .............. It's every man and his family for themselves !

Who are these nurses? Where are verifiable sources? What is this vague claim based on?bsflag

Nurses and doctors have a very specific involved training and skillset which if you were sick with Ebola would make even you hope they were still willing to help. It's reckless to praise or put up banners that say nurses walk away if that is what you are doing.

Thank God and continue to pray that some professionals highly skilled in biohazard are still willing/will be willing to help you when warfare prayers, nutrition, and hiding out don't stop you from getting sick.

Because if the professionals walk away the untrained folks will spread the disease even faster than it would otherwise be spread.

It doesn't have to be this way. Each state should have 1 or 2 Ebola certified hospitals with highly trained staff. This would minimize the exposure for all American healthcare workers.

I'd say if Ebola patients come to any local hospitals where I live, the nursing staff and nursing assistants will be the first to quit. They have the most patient contact, and I doubt they will be well protected.

My husband is a pilot, we have had this discussion.

He would leave and self quarantine elsewhere. Did you ever see the movie "at your door" I think it was called. That's what I think of. As much as I love him, our kids safety comes first. We agree this goes both ways, if I or he was exposed.
