Earlier today, an emergency message was carried on our network, as well as some other providers. A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) investigation indicates that a nationally syndicated radio show not affiliated with AT&T accidentally sent a message over the National Emergency Alert System. We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience.

I don't get how a RADIO show would have control over a TELEVISION emergency broadcast system??

This is how it works... President gives order to activate emergency alert system. Message is drafted then send from a satellite link or landline to a number of AM broadcast stations that can reach the entire country.

Then those stations broadcast their EAM which is picked up by all the individual TV providers, which then broadcast the message through their feeds.

If one AM station sent the signal by accident, it explains why only a few carriers had the issue. Those were the ones that were in range.

Once an EAN is received by an EAS participant from a PEP station (or any other participant) the message then "daisy chains" through the network of participants. "Daisy chains" form when one station receives a message from multiple other stations and the station then forwards that message to multiple other stations. This process creates many redundant paths through which the message may flow increasing the likelihood that the message will be received by all participants and adding to the survivability of the system.

Each EAS participant is required to monitor at least two other participants.

I was thinking just that today when my TV suddenly freaked out during a news broadcast, as if some type of EM field hit it - first thing I thought about was a CME - too bizarre

The FOX 5 Newsroom received multiple calls from concerned AT U-Verse customers Friday after an emergency message appeared on their screens.

The message, claiming to be an emergency alert issued by The White House, notified viewers that their programming was being re-directed to another channel. The alert is part of the EAN or Emergency Alert Notification. Engineers with FOX 5 say the alert can only be activated by the President in times of emergency.

U-Verse engineers tell FOX 5 staff the message appeared on screens around Atlanta, Dallas, Michigan and Austin, Texas.

Callers from across the FOX 5 viewing area reported the message.

There are no known actual emergency alerts that would have prompted activation of the government's Emergency Alert Notification System, which is used by broadcasters and the government to warn of emergency situations.

Statement from AT&T: "Earlier today U-verse TV customers may have received an Emergency Alert notification. We have confirmed that there is no emergency at this time and we are investigating why this occurred. We apologize for any inconvenience."

All of a sudden, the emergency alert message came up on the tv saying your channel is about to be forced tuned to a local news station. Then it said " you will receive an emergency action message from the White House".

Channel then changed automatically to a local station and then said " stay tuned for an emergeny alert message".

We have AT&T service and have the option to record any stations, but cannot record what is supposedly about to come on the station. We cannot even change the channel. FUCKING WEIRD!!!

Nothing has happened yet. We are still waiting to see what alert is coming.
