"The CBC’s top management must be looking nervously to England these days, as the Jian Ghomeshi scandal continues to reverberate across Canada.

Why England? Because the BBC is steeling itself to respond to criticism expected in a report on the sex crimes carried out by Jimmy Savile, who hosted Top of the Pops and other shows over the nearly five decades he worked for the BBC.

The report, due by year’s end, will reveal the extent of the BBC’s knowledge about the allegations against Savile, a source close to the investigation told The Observer newspaper.

While representing the BBC, Savile is believed to have sexually abused hundreds of boys and girls on BBC sets, and in change rooms and other locations. The allegations emerged in an ITV documentary in 2012, a year after Savile’s death. Following the broadcast, hundreds came forward and told of their abuse at Savile’s hands.

In compiling the report, Dame Janet Smith, a former judge, has contacted more than 700 people and interviewed 190 witnesses.

So what has Savile got to do with the CBC and Ghomeshi? The scale of Savile’s abuses is horrific. Ghomeshi, by comparison, is allegedly a minor-league offender.

But there is a parallel between Savile and Ghomeshi. Both men were celebrities who represented their corporate brand. In both cases, there is widespread belief — which may be unfounded — that management turned a blind eye to their conduct because they were big stars.

So far, Canadian media outlets have published the accounts of nine women and one man accusing Ghomeshi of harassment, physical abuse and sexual assault. Three women, including Trailer Park Boys actress Lucy DeCoutere, have gone to Toronto police, who are investigating.

It’s hard to disagree with the Toronto Star’s thundering editorial, in which it said the CBC ignored warning signs about Ghomeshi’s behaviour.

“Rumours were rife in media circles about Ghomeshi’s behaviour around women,” the Star said. “Yet CBC managers — who could not have been unaware of the gossip — did nothing."

I recently read a blog from someone from the city where I work, where she discusses being warned to stay away from Jian, when by chance he happened to be in the same bar as her. Also, in the last week I have talked to a few people just through work who brought it up.

They are in the local arts community and say that it was no surprise and was an open secret.

The CBC higher ups had to know and should get shit-canned. Watch and see, high heads are going to roll soon.
