People here get preppers and survivalists confused.
You people seem to not understand what "prepping" is.

Prepping, in today's form, is preparing for neighbor vs. neighbor (aka "urban" combat.)

Survivalists or old school preppers simply want to survive through whatever happens in the future.

There's a clear line between us preppers today and the old school preppers.

No problem. It gets aggravating to see each term used as loosely as a southern woman's trousers.

Survivalists learn they skills needed to survive anywhere they happen to be at any given time. Preppers stockpile all the stuff they think they'll need in the place they think they'll be when it all goes to shit.

Old school survivalism is far superior to prepping.

Yes but preppers are also legally backed by the NRA and the NRA offers prepper membership cards (and dues lol.)

That's why survivalists are so quick to say they are "preppers" but in reality...they wouldn't kill a fly.

survivalists hunker down as best they can, as a storm rages all around them

preppers die in the deluge caused by the storm, protecting their stash, lying draped over it...'noooo, not my stash!!!!!'

Yup, when the marauding bands of huns force the survivalist out of his home and into the ditch he picks the weeds he knows he can eat off the ditch bank and waits for the huns to leave. The prepper curls up in the fetal position in the ditch and cries until somebody hears him wailing and puts him out of his misery.

Hell no. The prepper starts with the shotgun and then if he's in a sporty mood he'll grab maybe a silencer or if he wants to do some real damage he'll grab a judge and shoot out both the intruder's legs.

The prepper is preparing to kill or maim...not stockpiling shit like a pussy shit.

Nothing wrong with stockpiling a reasonable stash of stuff. But also learn to live without it if the situation calls for that. In other words, be a little of both.

That "old school survivalism" sounds a lot like "loot everyone you have to in order to survive and if anyone gets in your way, kill them".

Preppers stockpile stuff at their own expense for their own future use, and only keep arms to defend themselves and their property.

What you've described above is the difference... and yes, I am prepping NOW so that I can SURVIVE later without having to loot and pillage my way across the countryside. There's a big difference all right.

Bullshit.
A "prepper" is preparing for hard times.
A survivalist lives with hard times in mind.
Not a dimes worth of difference.

Re: People here get preppers and survivalists confused.
what do you know about 1970-80's survivalists? ...

you weren't even a wet dream back then ... your mother was still getting abused by family members ...

you're one of the so-called preppers that get whacked immediately by some old granny kicking in her kitchen door ...

Humans invented agriculture for a reason. That reason is because roaming and foraging just whatever happens to be growing wild wasn't a very dependable survival strategy. Take today's modern world, and let's assume for sake of argument that you aren't going to loot the farmers or trespass on their property, but are only going to "graze" off public lands. Well, keep in mind that everyone else with the same philosophy is going to be out there "grazing" on cattail roots and pine cones at the same time. Everything will be fished out, hunted out and foraged out in a fortnight.

By the end of the second month the "survivalist" who thought he could "live off the land" and "survive anywhere" will be haggard, dirty, hypoglycemic, hypothermic and getting pretty desperate. About then, he'll think to wonder how those "preppers" he made fun of are doing. And immediately after that, he'll start wondering how he can get some of them to "share" their preps. Survive anywhere, including suburbia? Sure, if you've got enough stealth and a sharp knife and know where the Mormons and preppers live.

So I guess the survivalist/prepper line comes down to are you going to survive at your own expense, or at someone else's? I'm all for knowing how to "rough it" a bit and "make the most of what you've got". And most preppers will admit that if the choice comes down to watching their own children starve in the cold or going feral and taking what they need to take care of their kids, that they will take care of their kids no matter what and try to make up the bad karma somehow later. Not arguing that point. My issues are with the people who have violent theft/murder as their primary plan instead of making that the absolute last recourse, and instead are planning to make it as long as they can on their own resources.

If you want to laugh at a man for trying to take care of his family out of his own resources, when you'd prefer to rely on a strategy of looting and killing to compensate for your lack of willingness or ability to make any other kind of plan - you're to be pittied, not the prepper.
