Government revenue through taxes is expected to be 3 trillion dollars this year. They are supposed to spend 3.5 trillion this year. So without the taxes we would be running a 3.5 trillion dollar deficit. Instead we are running a 500 billion dollar deficit. Do you understand now? To clarify these are only federal tax numbers and federal spending. The state and local governments also collect a few trillion dollars in taxes combined and they also spend most of it. yes, the trick is working (wrap a net around us all and own us all and claim we did it to ourselves)
