Why do French schools give their students 2 hour lunch breaks while American students get 25 minute lunch breaks?

What do the French students do during two hours? Do they go home to eat?

U.S. schools wouldn't want kids roaming the halls on a 2-hour lunch break. Too much mayhem.

it doesn't take 2 hours to fucken eat. When I eat a meal Im done in 10 minutes tops, plenty of time to fart around after.

Why? Because they are indoctrinating their children to become accustomed to ridiculous amounts of time off benefits when they graduate and enter the civil service, socialist job market!

That's why..

American are so fat, they barely fit in their clothes, they don't need longer lunches.

I think that a 2 hour break during the middle of the day would allow students to rest and take a break from their studies.

That's the problem with this country...everyone rushes everything. Everyone laughs at the idea of taking a break, saying that "the kids wont have anything to do". Yes they will have something to do...resting.

I could say that about American kids just the same. I miss the fugging 80's

Here in Belgium, when I was still going to school, my lunch breaks would last an hour and ten minutes...

My Kindergartner gets 10 minutes to eat. The teachers are not pleased about the new rules. A group of 5 - 6 year olds cannot be expected to finish a meal in under 10 minutes. It can take that long to get them in their chairs and settled for a meal.

After they don't get to eat, they're allowed 15 minutes of play time either on the playground or in the gym (depending on the weather). That 15 minutes includes time to and from, getting shoes, coats and other apparel on/off.

Then they go back to "school". The last half of the day is hell for the whole group, teachers and aids included, since the kids are hungry, confused, upset they didn't get to play and generally off-kilter.

Wow, why anyone would want to send their child to school(unless there is no other option) is beyond me. That schedule is really messed up. Poor kids.

Yep and they stand in the lunch line for most of that. If you're diabetic or take any meds at all, gotta go see the nurse THEN get in line, you barely have time at all!!!

2 hours? Any break more than an hour and most Americans would call it a day and just go home.

American have fast food, so they eat faster.

I remember highschool... if I had 2 hour lunch breaks they'd have to extend the school day...

no way you're going to get in each subject intelligently if you're taking 2 hours off in the middle of the day...

even the kids wouldn't want this... they wanna get in and get out, 2 hours sitting around? teachers know the worst class is the class that just got off their lunch period, because the kids are wound up from that ...2 hours? you'd have the most restless kids who won't listen to jack shit.

They're training the kids to get ready for the workforce once they are out of school/college. Remember you only get a 30 min lunch break tops at most jobs nowadays. it's going to be rush,rush, rush, work 12 hr days, yes they are a comi'n and no vacations for you! wait and see.

I have never worked anywhere where they have a lunch "hour". Lunch is anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes and you are expected to not be late. I don't remember exactly how long my school lunches were but I know they were 40 minutes or less and everyone would be sleepy afterwards.

I think they copied the prison system. Give someone too much time in the middle of they day and they might become more productive or uncontrollable.

Then if they did give a longer lunch that would make the school day longer. Then you could suffer more from the traffic school buses cause.

Depends on French school and where it is: mostly, lunch break is an hour, sometimes longer in countryside if kids need to return home to eat. Kids are the same all over the world though: eat as quickly as possible so as to enjoy free time!

Or have a non-functioning pancreas due to a medical condition outside your control.

The French and the Italians have discovered the secret to life - a two hour lunch break. It's a tremendous practice.

It's a time to relax and talk with your family. This is a very good practice. Instead of nonstop government input into the children's heads, they get to discuss things with family members.

The tradition comes from a time when there was no air conditioning. In Italy and maybe France there are lots of places that still aren't air ocnditioned.

Meanwhile, in American schools the students wolf down dead substitutes for food and it's called lunch. LOL Is it any wonder 25% of students including 30% of teens are on at least one prescription drug long term?

The US education system was designed to program factory workers. Henry Ford had a great deal of influence on the implementation of creating a factory worker workforce. We don't have factories but the system has not been redesigned because those in charge of such matters are products of the system and cannot operate off the assembly line.

More indoctrination time.

in Germany, you had NO school after lunch - you went home for lunch and stayed.

here, yes. Get the day over so you can go home, or do clubs, or sports.

My kid goes to school from 8-4 and gets lunch at 10 am instead of customary 12-2 hours ...wtf!
My 7 year olds get home at 6 and has 2 hours of homework now and eats dinner and goes to bed at 9...wtf
