Why do people consider TALENT to be so important?
Talent is something that you have at birth or you don't. You can't earn talent, it's inherent. So, why do people consider talent to be so important?

These statements are considered to be the worst of put downs, why?

That musician is talentless!
That actor is a no-talent!
That athlete is untalented!
etc., etc., etc.

Personally, I think someone who strives and achieves success solely BECAUSE OF THEIR HARD WORK is far more noteworthy and praise-worthy than someone who achieves success solely because of the talent that they were born with. In the former case they earned their success, in the latter case, they were essentially handed their success by the luck of the draw (as far as we know).

Why is talent worshipped and considered to be so important?

I don't know, and it's a useless part of any beauty pageant, too. I mean, come ON! No one is going to win a pageant by being talented--unless being blessed with great genes is a talent, which it sort of is, making a "talent" portion rather duplicative.

When someone does something well, with no apparent effort, it amazes us. The more talent, the less it seems that effort is being used. Part of talent is the ability not to let them see you sweat.

Isn't the ability to make money, financial aptitude, and turning deals a talent too?

Why is that particular talent the one most rewarded? Why aren't all talents rewarded equally?

What IS reward?

Why do people consider making money to be the measure of all things?

Great point, this is why the mafia is worshipped! Too often, the ends justify the means and nobody really cares about anything.

I'm self employed as an artist. I guess you could say I'm talented at that.

I kind of resent your statement about having something handed to you. I still had to develop skills in using the tools of my trade. I might have an edge on the average person in inspiration but you also have to learn method. In this modern age we do a lot of this stuff on computers. I had to learn to turn my ideas into formated computer files.

So you see it is still work, and does take an effort on my part.

I have met a lot of people in my life. I can't remember that many that didn't have a talent for something or a passion for something. Perhaps some people have difficulty finding that special something in themselves. But in most cases it is there, somewhere. Keep looking if you haven't found yours.

people who are mediocre and unmotivated, or lazy
make all kinds of excuses for why they were born with no talent

That's one part of it but what's with the worship of talent. I remember one of my best friends seemed to have one criteria concerning whether or not he liked a band:

"I think they have talent, they're ok."
"They have no talent, I can't respect them."

I see this attitude all over and I don't get it.

I understand, please read this again:

"I think someone who strives and achieves success solely BECAUSE OF THEIR HARD WORK is far more noteworthy and praise-worthy than someone who achieves success SOLELY BECAUSE OF the talent that they were born with"

I was trying to use the most extreme case is to illustrate my point. This doesn't happen very often, of course, but it does happen occasionally.

Re: Why do people consider TALENT to be so important?
The other poster was correct. Nobody is born with talent, though you may be born with a combination of the right stuff to do some things with superiority IF you put in the thousands of hours to develop in specific areas.

I'll tell you why talent is important. Because, when applied correctly, the person raises the bar of excellence, finds personal fulfillment, expands their mind creatively, inspires others, and - this is the best part - is then able to make superior cross-references (that others would NEVER be able to make) because of multiple superiorities crossing in their unique way.

"but I could have told you, Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as You"

We all have one competitor alone - ourself.

Learn to love 'the process' and love the ride.

Here's a great example:

You have a gigantic brain tumor and have to have surgery to keep you alive. You get to choose from surgeon A and surgeon B.

Surgeon A: Pretty good, works hard at his skills, good success rate.

Surgeon B: Outstanding! Seems like he was born to be a brain surgeon. Works hard at his skills, is naturally deft and articulate with his fingers and is the brain surgeon that all the other brain surgeons would pick to operate on themselves. Outstanding success rate.

I agree but the value of talented people has declined over the yrs and is actually at rock bottom or close to it

Who wants to listen to a bad musician, watch a bad actor or see a wide receiver drop every ball thrown to him. Talent is important because it's what makes them different than every other person who tries to do the same thing.

Not all talent is inherited at birth. A talented Texas Hold 'Em player isn't born with the ability to win the World Series of Poker. Hard work and practice is the still the back-bone of the talented.

Because Talent is one of those unique defining traits that allow an individual to stand out above the rest.
So many of us blend together until we become a blur...talented people break apart that blur and shows us something we can relate to on an individual level.
Don't argue with idiots, you'll never win!

Re: Why do people consider TALENT to be so important?
everyone has talent. the problem arises in the judgemental attitude that certain abilities are more 'desirable' than others. there is no differnce in the importance of a person who has entertainment talents over those who have more quotidian talents. i.e. a good singer is no more important than a good ditch digger...
