Happy Winter Solstice!

For those of you who haven't already heard, today is the longest night EVER -- since the Earth began spinning.

Let me explain.

While you probably already knew that tonight was the longest night of the year, you might have overlooked the fact that the Earth's rotation is slowing over time. That, largely thanks to the moon, we will continually have to add leap seconds to the days every few years.

Tonight WILL BE the longest night you've ever experienced.

The official solstice (when the Earth begins to drift back the other way) will be 6:03PM EST, and the moon will join the sun in renewing it's cycle at 8:36 pm EST. These two events only sync up every 19 years or so....

So if you can, take a moment tonight and recognize just how rare tonight really is.
