3Rd UPDATE 6:20 PM: Sony just posted on one of its main Twitter feeds, acknowledging that the PlayStation Network continues to be offline and that it has ‘no ETA’ for when the service will return to operation. Meanwhile, attacks appear to have renewed in the past two hours on Microsoft’s competing Xbox Live network. UPDATE: Five hours later, there has been little progress on the PSN front. “Our engineers are continuing to work hard to resolve the network issues users have experienced today,” AskPlayStation tweeted at 11:30 PM. “Thanks for your continued patience!”

Its kind of spooky when you think about it. A group of gamer hackers can take down not one, but two very large networks.

I'd assume both Sony and Xbox have some pretty intricate security protocols. Makes you wonder just how safe all our essential networks really are?

PSN is still down for many people.

I don't know what's worse, the feeling of inadequacy that motivates these freaks to take down gaming networks as the only means they have to feel good about themselves, or how shitty Sony and Microsoft's security is.

The last time that I heard Playstation Network was built wide open with the expectation that only Playstations would be able to connect.

Once a hacker cleared that hurdle it became evident that Sony had no respect for security.

So was this the Christmas present thee hackers promised a couple weeks ago? To get the kids off the consoles and spend time with the family? That's a good present...

Not breaking at all. Lizard Squad did this yesterday.

I was at home, alone for Christmas with my brand new PS4 that I couldn't play... so it was a terrible hacker's present for me. I ended up sleeping most of the day away because I couldn't play my new console.

Lame.

The Internet is becoming unsafe for us citizens... I propose thar we give King Barry Executive Powers that will allow him to protect our Internet experience. Thank God King Barry is looking out for us little people!!!

Most of the "hacking" Lizard Squad does isn't even really classified as hacking by most hackers. A simple DoS attack doesn't take much more than a program (probably not even written by someone in their crew) a computer and a stable network connection. DoS attacks are the easiest of all hacking related attacks one can perform.

I suspect these attacks are being down by shadow groups within gov. They want people to get so fed up with hackers, that they will announce a solution that can fix all this (their ultimate goal anyways) and we will be thankful. More of our rights will be taken away.

Maybe they could protect us by requiring everyone to input a thumb print or a retina scan before they are granted access to the World Wide Web. That could protect us from these Bogeyman Hackers!!!

ahhhh....ok. Yesterday "Santa" gave my older 2 boys each a playstation card for their PSP's. They loaded the card to each, and then tried to buy a game...it let them buy the game but downloading it just would not happen. This must be why. Hopefully they dont lose that $$ now though. It was only $20 for each, but still.

Not in this case. Lizard Squad, the group responsible for these attacks like to classify themselves as a hacktivist group. They've been around for a while, hell you can even check out their twitter page.

In the matter you speak of will only be bread by ignorance of others not understanding who's behind the "hacking".

Lizard Squad did this so that kids would be forced to turn their video game consoles off and spend time with their families, not too terrible of a motive if you ask me.

Not a horrible motive no, but not really cool to do to people either. It should be to kids' parents to set boundaries, period. My 3 boys have more than enough electronic stuff, but they get 2 hours a day, and thats it. My older 2 not being able to fully use one of their christmas presents yesterday was disappointing for them.

I agree that parents should but most parents are completely out of control. Not calling you out on a personal level, and I'm sorry that your kids weren't able to fully enjoy their gifts, but at the same time it's also teaching kids a lesson that most parents are incapable of doing themselves.

Well, I couldn't get on all day and night yesterday, so I registered for a text alert from Microsoft when it was over, and I got a text at 4:34 AM today that service is restored. So, technically, it seems to have been over early this morning.

But yeah, "breaking" in the title, and it was posted today.
