When I was a kid. I used to have this recurring dream/nightmare -- for years -- of this flying lady (a witch?) chasing me around the yard and neighborhood.

I would always just keep running and dodging until I would wake up from terror.

One night -- while dreaming this dream -- I decided to try and escape the flying lady by running into the woods.

She followed.

Chasing me through the trees and the brush I scrambled deeper and deeper into the wooded darkness, until I came upon a swamp.

With the witch's icy claws upon the nape of my neck, I dove in.

Immediately, she stopped... stared at me -- almost in bewilderment -- and she sunk, disintegrating into the banks of the murky bog. A gust of wind caught her hat and cloak, and blew them into the muck.

Still worried, I fearfully grasped at her floating clothing. There was nothing/no one there.

She was gone, and I woke up.

Some time later -- My neighbor's sister's grandson was visiting / on some sort of holiday. I related the story to him, and he decided that we should go into the woods and see if there was an actual swamp there, as he claimed to have never seen one in his many previous outings in those woods.

I was a little apprehensive, but after convincing myself that it was just a dream, I quieted my fears, and we set off early the next morning.

We were picking up sticks... examining rocks... checking out cool bugs -- just wondering into the woods. All the sudden we came upon this strange hill -- one that we'd never seen before, one rather unusual. We climbed over it -- very loose gravel face -- and as we looked down on the other side, we saw a massive wall of vines and ivy with one perfect hole in it (about 5 feet in diameter).

As we approached it became obvious that the hole was a natural fixture -- like a giant braided wreath of vines. But, it looked too perfect to be natural.

We got closer.

The hole was an entry-way... a portal.

To what? A boggy marsh -- surrounded on all sides by a high, natural wall of brushy covering with this single entry and single exit.

This was too weird. I went in first. It looked exactly like the marsh of my dream. I actually looked around for the witches cloak and hat -- I found neither.

At the far end of the bog was a giant tree that had grown -- not carved -- into a giant laughing face. I remember walking into its mouth and being totally mesmerized by this. Everything was so strange.

Then, rather unexpectedly, my companion said "let's go".

"Let's go?" I thought? "How does he not just want to stay here and soak up all the happy magical energies?" But, his coldness suggested some kind of authority. So, I didn't question him.

We climbed out of the portal, leaving the magical marsh behind us. We started walking deeper into the woods.

While trekking, and just really up in my head about what I had just experienced, I got a bit ahead of my partner.

All of a sudden, I hear him call my name. I turn around, don't see him, but immediately realize that I'm no longer in a natural wood, but a perfectly patterned tree-garden (much like that scorpion/johnny cage fight scene wood) where all the trees were the exact same (skinny) size, and in perfect rows.

I say "where are you?"

No response.

Louder now, "Where are you!?"

I see him walk out from behind this skinny tree (which he was much wider than) and then disappear behind another skinny tree. I hear him laughing like he's all around me.

I ran to where he was, but he wasn't there. More laughing. Now he magically exits and re-enters behind some other skinny trees, farther away. still laughing.

I stop.

I say "this isn't funny".

Immediately, the woods become woods again -- no more symmetric grove of skinny trees -- and the day had turned to night... in an instant.

I made my way back to my house. My parents had been wondering where I had been all day -- they were beginning to worry about me.

I told them I was out with the neighbor's sister's grandson.

They said "impossible, he's been out of town visiting his mother for the past 2 days".

*Sigh*

And this is how things are.

There are more stories, great stories about these woods -- but for another time.

Also, if you're wondering, later in life I searched for the peculiar hill, the ivy-portaled bog, the laughing-head tree-trunk, and the infinite symmetrical grove, but never found them again.

Edited to add: Oh, I after the dream when I dove into the bog and the witch[?] finally stopped chasing me, I never had that dream again.
