Dried beans go "bad". When they get old (they donot keep more than a year) they turn into little stones that cannot be cooked soft, and too heavy to carry. They also take too much fuel to cook and too long to prepare.

Meat is the only thing i can think of. It can be dried, smoked, causing it to be light weight, and/or travel on its own legs with you.
