Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33538514 OP, if you get mylar bags, get the small ones! I got some huge ones, and of course I can't move them at all now that they are full. LOL. The smaller ones hold about 5 lbs each. Even a 13-year-old can move that. I only buy the 1 gallon sized. I'm not a big time prepper that gets tons of buckets and filled them with the 5-6 gallon mylar with wheat. Too heavy and we just don't have the money to do what I would really like. Just do the best we can and over time, it is amazing what can happen. Soak eggs in mineral oil and they last for 20 years without refrigeration. Mylar bags. You can seal em up and they will last 20-30 years. I agree with rice & beans...and honey. This. Also add Aramanth. Also it's very easy to make powdered eggs. You can also preserve your own meats with kosher salt or you can make a brine with salt, brown sugar, or smoke your meats. |

Honey lasts forever and it is a good ointment for wounds as well. Where do you find mylar bags? I know you have to get rid of the oxygen in the bags as well. I've heard you can buy oxygen absorbents, but heard you can use hand warmers and they work just as well. Www.usaemergencysupply.com I've bought from them and the bags are nice and thick. Great quality. |

When they get old (they donot keep more than a year) they turn into little stones that cannot be cooked soft, and too heavy to carry. They also take too much fuel to cook and too long to prepare. Meat is the only thing i can think of. It can be dried, smoked, causing it to be light weight, and/or travel on its own legs with you. |

I think thats why merkans dont include fat in their preps..they dont need to as each one of them carries enough blubber to last em at least 40 years. Well, I think the OP was trying to be helpful, no need to insult him "oh might Aussie". By the way, you are the country that made Jacko popular, so I would not throw stones. |

You dont have all the needed parameter to prepare yourself even for tommorrow. The best you do is being yourself, every moment. With this you get the right to do whatever you want. Conciousness (yours to be pracise) will guide you and help you. Just do your thing and you will be prepaired the best :) Trust have faith hower they call it. But there is nothing to fear. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 66707361 United States 01/08/2015 03:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Also, FYI on the eggs: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33538514 Eggs can be kept un-refrigerated ONLY if they start out un-refrigerated! Once they have been chilled, they must be kept that way. My boat cruising friends taught me that. They buy fresh eggs (not chilled) and keep them stashed on the boat wherever they are least likely to get broken. I don't know how long they will last, though. I assume they will still go bad at some point. For long term storage, powdered eggs are safer, IMHO (although I'm sure not as tasty). If you soak them in mineral oil they are rumored to last 20 plus years. sorry guy but I don't know who sold you that BS .... you'll get 6 months possibly 8 months coating eggs with FOOD GRADE mineral oil ... the longest preserving longevity is a year using the water glass immersion method .... all preservation methods require cool, temp steady and no lite storage conditions ... I have pop coolers that are currently used for cushioned & protective storage for critical tools and supplies .... the coolers will be my egg storage containers being unrefrigerated is not near as important as being FRESH and UNWASHED .... store bought eggs will not store worth a damn because of machine scrubbing at the egg factories 20 years if you go with canned dehydrated eggs .... buy in #10 cans .... don't attempt as a DIY type job - you'll poison yourself |

Quoting: SPUD From my understanding, all grains in the freezer for at least a week before you do anything with them storage wise. just one of those idiotic urban legends that got started somehow .... do you know what's happening right now? ... most of the grain in this country is in freezing temperature ... sub zero temps across the grain growing northern states ... and the grain will be in those conditions for months .... guess what? .... all the insect larva/eggs will survive very nicely .... nature provides no need to freeze prior to starting your long term packing procedures ... in fact you will be causing possible problems - freezing induces moisture .... you bring your food, to be packed, up to room temp and provide a humidity free environment (AC for summer months) .... what keeps the insect larva/eggs from hatching and spoiling your stored food is the air voided conditions in the mylar bag/food grade bucket ... no air - no bugs .... just an added benefit to the modern food packing methods |

Multivitamins and minerals - 2 Years plus Honey - 50 Years plus Water treatment tablets - 100 Years plus Dried Beans/lentils etc 10 Years plus Powdered Milk, eggs and potatoes - 3 Years plus ============================================ Let's say you have a tight budget and want 1 Years food per person: Rice and beans will give you all the essential amino acids. Throw in some tinned meat and vegetables. Treats are Coffee with lots of sugar , tinned fruit with honey, chocolate It's a simple list but you can go out and get 3 Months food from this list for £1 per day, roughly $1.5 . Look, it ain't great eating, but it's food. You will need to allocate 3000 - 4000 calories per day to account for the expenditure on fighting the tyranny or finding extra resources. FORGET 2000 calories per day, you will need more to thrive. I have spent probably a hundred hours plus breaking this down into calories per food and how much you would need. Is anyone interested. OK my reply is all a bit crap, but I'm on some lovely single malt whiskey and 'I'm FEELING GOOD' billy loads of mates |
