Guesses are welcome...... I'm thinking it's an air duct. Yours are probably insulated, muffling the metallic quality of the noise. Ductwork is prone to harmless ticking as it warms up and cools down, but sometimes a piece will have just the right amount of stress in it that a little expansion or contraction results in an impressive popping sound. Pay attention to the next time your heating system cycles, and when it shuts down, note the time. Two and a half minutes later, there's the mysterious noise. Next heating cycle will be the exact same thing, and a person could almost use this to check their clock's accuracy. Now, this hypothesis is based on you having a forced-air heatimg system. If it's hydronic, someone else has suggested an alternate (but similar) explanation, but I don't think we ever got an answer as to the type of heating system you have. And if the noise is unmistakeably liquid-sounding, and if it only happens during and following rain, then it's related to the rain (and probably to the new roof). But I wouldn't be betting on that. |

Guesses are welcome...... and then they cited me for messing with my water meter! Quoting: beeches AS IT TURNS OUT, every time there was a water main break in the neighborhood, my pipes had the water sucked out, causing the "moaning" sound. It also caused my water meter to spin backwards, making me have a ridiculously low water usage. Well all was solved. They realized I had not tampered with the water meter. Am I reading this right, they formally cited you? That wouldn't be a minor thing; in most jurisdictions, it's a misdemeanor, and if the estimated dollar value of the "theft" is enough, they could even raise it to a felony. So once they realized what was actually afoot, did you receive apology after apology after apology? |
