I have a mystery suction cup noise in my house, I can't figure out what it is. Guesses are welcome......

Yours are probably insulated, muffling the metallic quality of the noise. Ductwork is prone to harmless ticking as it warms up and cools down, but sometimes a piece will have just the right amount of stress in it that a little expansion or contraction results in an impressive popping sound. Pay attention to the next time your heating system cycles, and when it shuts down, note the time. Two and a half minutes later, there's the mysterious noise. Next heating cycle will be the exact same thing, and a person could almost use this to check their clock's accuracy.

Now, this hypothesis is based on you having a forced-air heatimg system. If it's hydronic, someone else has suggested an alternate (but similar) explanation, but I don't think we ever got an answer as to the type of heating system you have.

And if the noise is unmistakeably liquid-sounding, and if it only happens during and following rain, then it's related to the rain (and probably to the new roof). But I wouldn't be betting on that.

As an experiment I decided to unplug the cat heating pad which is fairly new. The noise stopped.

The cat jumped on my bed in the morning and nipped me 6 times, almost biting me.

Button has arthritis and has been using the pad. The next day I plugged it in and she didn't get off of it all day.

Must have been the thermostat turning the pad on and off. That was a tough one.

Check out food grade diatomaceious earth for your cat's arthritis. Works for people too. Many uses...
