Saw a strange and tragic event yesterday. A death in a motel room with propane and a tent, the deceased seems to be a Washington DC lawyer.

I saw and heard this event unfold during a meeting in the area, was not free to get up and use my phone for a photo.

The Delaware State Police identified the man late Saturday as 34-year-old Matthew Ornstein of Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The Delaware State Police say Ornstein was found dead inside a tent he built on top of his bed in a room at the Days Inn on Churchman’s Road. Authorities say propane canisters were found inside the room, and an investigation determined Ornstein was using them as a lighting source inside the tent.

yes, some ideas. He was not a random schizophrenic homeless man. He appears to have possibly been a Washington DC area lawyer.

Probably a suicide

There is a chance it is NOT the same Matthew Ornstein, but the age and location fit.

What was he doing setting up a tent in a motel room, using propane to light up the tent, anyway??

the local news article does not mention the terrible odor, like overheated plastic, all over the area of the motel.

that is what I am thinking. Stanton Delaware (the area is also called Christiana by some) is an easy drive from the Washington, DC area.

The poor man possibly did not want to do it close to home.

ON THE OTHER HAND, we have the unsolved murder of presidential aide Jack Wheeler here. The anniversary of his death is just about now.

Wheeler was killed in one area, and his body taken to a dumpster miles away.

I am not yet ready to think there was no foul play here. This death is simply too bizarre.

Our Attorney General is Beau Biden. Sound familiar? Vice President Joe Biden's son.

I never heard of someone erecting a tent on a bed and then light the tent with a propane lamp. I might believe it if the guy was 10 years old. Sounds like it might have something to do with drug use.

you may be right. I was in a motel once and the fire alarm went off, it was someone covering up the smoke detector in their room in order to cook some drugs.

I am going to assume that the linkedin profile is of the man found dead, but of course, that could be wrong.

This may drop like a stone into media oblivion, or it may not. Depends on what this man was, while he was alive.

I feel so terrible for him and his family. This has be beyond tragic for them.

This is bizarre!

Also bizarre that the cops ruled it 'not suspicious', 'no foul play', all within hours of discovering the body.

Seems to be an easy way out for them, when perhaps they either do not want to investigate it fully, or hope that the public on hearing that will yawn and pay no attention.

Something this bizarre, with such weird circumstances, seems to just beg for a full investigation. Something that 'ought to' take some time, days perhaps weeks, sometimes way longer than that even.

And then to learn that he could have been an attorney, not the general, run of the mill, down on his luck dude, makes me think first of his being 'suicided'. Makes about as much sense as a top-level banker 'throwing himself/herself out the window'.

If he was an attorney, am sure the cops had no time (in those first few hours before calling it not suspicious) to fully go thru his current cases, as well as those from the past. Could be something HUGE he was working on.... perhaps calling a witness some higher up didn't want yakking, maybe a former disgruntled client, it could be SOOO much.

Seems no justice will be done for this man. Whatever his story was. Even if it turns out he did himself in, they still will likely not have bothered to find out why.

no one is an idiot on my thread. There is very little clarity about what went on there.

no mention of any combustion in the news reports. My car still smells off though, like hot plastic. The odor was all over the place after it happened.

the motel was just off the I-95 exit here, a straight drive from Chevy Chase.

perhaps he did not want anyone he knew to be the one to find him.

But I am not convinced it was suicide - yet.
