Feb. 20 & 21 - Moon, Venus, Mars
Good day.

Mark your calendar for a celestial viewing and photo opportunity on February 20 2015 and February 21 2015.

On Feb. 20 the crescent moon, Venus, and Mars will form a tight group (3° or less) in the western sky just after sunset. The crescent moon will present the illuminated portion pointing downward and the "horns" pointing upward as is usual during the winter/spring.

On Feb, 21 the crescent moon will have moved higher in the sky in relation to Venus and Mars but the group will still only occupy ~13° (a little more than a handsbreadth) which may make an even better image depending on your tastes. On this day Venus and Mars make their closest approach in years.

Here's a link to an article with visual representation:

Get those cams and tripods ready and hope for clear skies.

Have fun.

Just a reminder:
Tonight and tomorrow night for the Venus-Mars-Moon show.

Check the link in the OP.
You can go here for an interactive planetarium:
[link to www.skyviewcafe.com]

This requires JAVA to run. I like it because it auto-selects some place near your IP location and has a nice interface. It also has a lot of other information in the tabbed pages.

Advance the time until just at sunset.
Go to the left Options
Change the 1st entry to: Horizon - 45° Span
Go into the display area and drag to the west until you see Venus, Mars, Moon.
Advance time as required.
Try it.

Clear skies and have fun.

Hope we have clear skies. Sounds like something special, esp with Mars and Venus so close.

Thanks.

If anyone wants to see what our European friends have already seen, the spaceweather image page from Rachel's link is:
[link to spaceweathergallery.com]

They will continue to get closer together as time goes on this evening so we in the western hemisphere will see them closer than they are showing.

Have fun.

OP, I see you are into astronomy - I'm not sure you are so much into astrology, but I have seen too many 'coincidences' with astrological predictions vs. reality to dismiss it entirely.

Mercury was in retrograde, that period just ended. There is always a waxing and waning period with these things, and this cusp has been particularly extreme - do you feel like these other celestial happenings are impacting our collective energy in some way?

OP or anyone with insight?

I'm lucky tonight.

Normally we're like someone above who said, 'Haven't seen the stars for months'. Tonight it is relatively clear and I have a west facing window that is giving me a great view right now, without having to go outside and freeze.

Have fun.

Well, that was quite beautiful. Venus was a dazzling bright diamond and Mars was a dusky red garnet next to the thin crescent moon.

I'm sure some of the photogs will get breathtaking images.

Have fun.

Still dusk here, but it looks relatively clear. well, partly cloudy. I am hoping.

Edit for later post:

Only caught a glimpse of the peachy colored moon before a big cloud moved in and blocked it all.

But the moon was beautiful in among those dark blue clouds.

Maybe tomorrow night
