Quoting: madaigual For the past 20 years the name has been, inexplicably IMHO, gaining popularity in almost all Anglo-Saxon countries (currently #2 baby name in UK), except for the USA where its use has been in constant decline since the very early 1900s. The power of words perhaps? Charlie is used as slang for the enemy in war |

Because as much as I hate all religions (including Islam) I won't make fun of it out in the open. I know the difference between my own thoughts, and freedom of speech VS being an imbecile. Let religious tards be tardy. They'll never change their mind. But just let them be. No need to escalate hate organized religion loves to use as their only logical defence. |

Charlie is the enemy and in the UK "a proper charlie" is an idiot, we've been dissuaded from using a word which means " a free man" We're all pawns, you know! |

The power of words perhaps? Charlie is used as slang for the enemy in war AFIK it was during the war in Vietnam. Vietnamien army - Viet Cong was refered to as VC - spelled "Victor - Charlie", or simply Charlie. Since then people sometimes say "f*ck you, charlie". That's what i'm saying to those who say they are Charlie. If youre Charlie, youre that: [link to ic.pics.livejournal.com] |

All week the TV has shown millions holding up signs that effectively say "I am a free man" (even though the people holding them don't realise that's what it says) Not "I'm Billy", "I'm John" etc. What are the odds to that happening! We're all pawns, you know! |

Quoting: idiot-savant I agree with you totally, I wasn't mocking religion - each to his/her own! My post has nothing to do with recent events. The most we can ever hope for is to have freedom of choice, which is exactly what the word Charlie (ceorl) originally meant... Yet somehow the name has been given a negative spin: a fool/ the enemy...etc. My question is why and by whom? So the title says "Let's all be free" We're all pawns, you know! |
