I the late 90s I lived in Twin Falls for a year, it was nice, but boring as shit. I had to move. Went to Boise, and only lasted about 10 months. I had to move back the the Seattle area. My 2 years in Idaho was good. People were actually people and living was so cheap. Also, drinking is a big thing. I mean, I know we all drink everywhere. But I mean like you go into a restaurant, and half the time it looks empty. They you go into the bar and it's packed. Day, morning or night.

Keep in mind I was just hitting my 20s, up until then lived my whole life in the Seattle area. I realized in the first two weeks, the people were nice, but kinda rough. Not like mean, but sketchy looking and acting. But once you talk you have a friend. I think it was just a cutler shock, from the big city, to not. Everyone seemed to hunt, even the high school kids and women. People all knew how to change a tire and not call AAA. People were just self sufficient.

So, I didn't really help, but yeah...

Small town is good. Foothills is good. Alone in the mountains if you have not ever lived in the mountains, this time of year could be really ill advised. A lot of those mountains, even the deer leave in the winter. Lewis and Clark almost died in those mountains.

I live in eastern Idaho near the Tetons. Great country, so if into outdoors, you'll love it. Economy is not great, but better than some places. If you are not Mormon, as I am not, you may be looked down upon and judged frequently. Also be careful with doing business with a Mormon, they are not honest and will screw you over for money, especially if you aren't Mormon.
Although I love the area and was raised in the western portion of Idaho, and living the last decade out in the Ohio valley, I definaly feel out of place. This area has a huge cult type atmosphere about it.
But overall, I would recommend it, it is much safer for a family to live here than most areas.

Yes, Alcohol consumption in these parts is well beyond what may be considered normal in most of America.

Oh, people drink more in Montana than they do in Idaho or Wyoming, OP.... waaaaay more.

Also, Montanan's drug(s) of choice are prescription pills/narcotics -- with the highest rate of abuse of anywhere in the states -- something like 3 out of 4 people abuse them up here -- actual statistic, but I've also seen with my own eyes.

Alcohol is not something consumed often where I live in Idaho.
The town I live in the mormons own all the liquor licenses in order to prevent a bar from coming in. No alcohol on Sunday can be sold at a gas station, or on thanksgiving, Christmas.....

Montana is like the most libertarian place you can possibly live in the US.

Yeah there are "laws", but nobody's really going to give you a hard time about anything you do unless you don't fit in and start being disagreeable.

In fact, that's really the only crime in the non-metropolitan / normal Montanan parts; don't send out any non-libertarian / judgemental signals, and you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want.

First town I moved to in Montana -- on the highline -- The first person outside of my coworkers who introduced themselves to me was the actual sheriff who invited me to go to the shooting range with him.

Its that kind of place.

Then you will appreciate Wyoming. I have Friends from Riverton they just really love it. You will need to escape to civilization occasionally but I would move to Wyoming. Just beautiful country, conservative politics, well funded schools, low taxes!!

Personally your water, food and air are clean! You will live forever.

Yes, people are "friendly", but, where there are no black people, white people begin to fill the role of the archetypal thugs and social deviants. Not being aware of / prepared for this can allow "friendliness" to get you caught up in some crazy shit in a hurry.

The Hayden lake in know is just south of Missoula. I'd live there. Beautiful summers and snowy winters.

I also wanna clear up my earlier statement about law enforcement up here. (then I'll quit spamming the thread). If you actually do get busted for something (because you're that dumb) then you're probably not going to see any leniency.

Ok. First thing you need to learn -- if you're moving out here -- is that Montanans (Especially), North-Dakotans, and Wyomingians (?) think of their states as countries. "Officially" they're part of the federal US union, but its not like how it is in NY or Jersey or Montreal or The Maryland/WV/VI or New England or The Carolinas.

There are distinctions, and they are important.

There are petro-vagrants (bakken oil-field workers) but with the collapsing petro-dollar they'll be heading back to wherever they came from as well. i.e. You may have some more luck with a "wyomingers only" thread.

In any event.

Montanans and North Dakotans rass each other.
Wyoming is like a distant cousin everybody's nice to when they come around.
Idahoans may as well be Coloradans -- too cosmopolitan.
Texans like to think they're like Montanans, but Montanans scoff at this.
Californians like to move to Montana, but Montanans despise this -- no clue why they want to come here (but I know why, it was that gary shandling schtick).

So, there you have it.

Oh, and any American who is not from the states mentioned in my previous post or is not a Mexican probably can't find Montana (despite its being so big) on a map. So, you can guess how they figure in.
