Bans on Kosher meat in Anti-Semitic Europe
In the past decade four European countries, Belgium, France Germany and Holland have banned the kosher slaughter of animals bringing the total number of European countries banning the practice to eight.

The Swiss banned kosher slaughter in 1902 and saw an anti-Semitic backlash against a proposal to refused to lift it a century later.

Both Holland and Switzerland have considered extending the ban in order to prohibit importing kosher products.

The former chief rabbi of Norway, Michael Melchior, argues that anti-Semitism is a motive for the bans:

"...it's certainly no coincidence that one of the first things Nazi Germany forbade was kosher slaughter. I also know that during the original debate on this issue in Norway, where shechitah has been banned since 1930, one of the parliamentarians said straight out, 'If they don't like it, let them go live somewhere else.'"

Melchior, who was serving as Israeli deputy foreign minister at the time of the Dutch debate, also said "they simply don't want foreigners and they don't want Jews...The lie that ritual slaughter is cruel simply shows a hatred for Jewish life."

Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League says that the bans came about due to animal rights campaigners being "aided and abetted" by anti-Semitic politicians.

"Sometimes anti-Semites will use this as a vehicle to try to isolate the Jewish community by reaching out to those who are so preoccupied with [animal rights]...The key is whether or not there is a history in that country. ... What other issues of animal rights have they engaged in to prohibit cruelty? When they begin and end with kosher slaughter, that's when I become suspect."

Rabbi Menachem Genack, the kashrut administrator for the Orthodox Union said of the bans "It's ominous...This kind of legislation in Europe has to be understood in the context of European history. A person would have to be extremely naive not to think that this is linked to anti-Semitism."

"This is a trend that is very much worrying us," said Avi Beker, secretary general of the World Jewish Congress "We regard this as interference in Jewish religious practices."

In Switzerland, Christopher Blocker, a cabinet minister for the right-wing Swiss People's Party who was found guilty of anti-Semitism by a Zurich court in 1999, has supported calls to ban the import of kosher and halal meat.

The Swiss Animal Association called for a referendum on banning kosher imports.

Kosher slaughter causes animals more pain - this is not anti-semitic.

Abe Foxman is such a neurotic douche. If one said Pepsi tasted better and he liked Coke you would be anti-semitic.

Abe is as whiny as Andy Rooney. I wish they would both retire or die and leave us alone.

It's not just the Jews....Same method with Muslims. OPPS can't say no to Muslims one must only control Jews

from the BBC

The method of animal slaughter used by Jews and Muslims should be banned immediately, according to an independent advisory group.
The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC), which advises the government on how to avoid cruelty to livestock, says the way Kosher and Halal meat is produced causes severe suffering to animals.

Both the Jewish and Muslim religions demand that slaughter is carried out with a single cut to the throat, rather than the more widespread method of stunning with a bolt into the head before slaughter.

Kosher and Halal butchers deny their method of killing animals is cruel and have expressed anger over the recommendation.

'Clearly suffering'

One worshipper at the Central London Mosque told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Everything about the Islamic way of life is under attack so it makes you wonder if this is actually about humanity to animals."

Peter Jinman, president of the British Veterinary Association said vets respected people's religious beliefs, but urged Muslims to be respectful of animals too.

The brain is instantaneously starved of blood and there is no time to start feeling any pain

Muslim Council of Great Britain

"We're looking at what is acceptable in the moral and ethical society we live in," he told Today.

FAWC said it wanted an end to the exemption currently allowed for Kosher and Halal meat from the legal requirement to stun animals first.

It says cattle can take up to two minutes to bleed to death - amounting to an abuse of the animals.

"This is a major incision into the animal and to say that it doesn't suffer is quite ridiculous," said FAWC chairwoman, Dr Judy MacArthur Clark.

Compassion in World Farming backed the call, saying: "We believe that the law must be changed to require all animals to be stunned before slaughter."

'Way of life'

Muslims and Jews argue that their long established method of slaughter results in a sudden loss of blood from the head, causing animals to feel virtually nothing.

Q&A: Animal slaughter

They say they will fight any attempt to prevent a practice required by their religion and central to their way of life.

One rabbi, who had been practicing the Jewish method of animal slaughter for around 40 years, told BBC News: "The process takes a fraction of a second.

"With a very, very sharp knife all the vessels in the neck are severed and that means there's no blood going to the brain and the animal loses consciousness very rapidly and dies soon after that."

The Muslim Council of Britain says animals are not distressed when they are slaughtered.

"It's a sudden and quick haemorrhage. A quick loss of blood pressure and the brain is instantaneously starved of blood and there is no time to start feeling any pain," said spokesman Dr Majid Katme.

The Humanists movement, which has previously called for the abolition of ritual slaughter, said ethical values should be put above religious ones.

"There is no imperative for Muslims or Judaists to eat meat produced in this manner," said spokesman Roy Saich.

"There is no reason why they should not simply abstain from eating meat altogether if they do not wish to eat the same meat as the rest of us." [link to news.bbc.co.uk]

YaoHuVeHshua's new, and everlasting Covenant does not require anyone to be bound by the religious rites and rituals, such as keeping Kosher, that were foreshadowing picture types of old. YaoHuVeHshua is the reality of type, in substance, personified !

hala & kosher slaughter causes suffering as there is no stunning before slaughter & the animal bleeds to death slowly.

quite simply an archaic slaughter method well past it's time.

so yes it should be banned.

Exactly, obviously there must be some kosher slaughterhouses where the job is done better but nevertheless, every poor beast is clamped in a head restrainer, flipped upside down, has its throat cut and then cut out - all whilst still aware. the only difference between good and bad is the time it takes to die.

Good to set the record straight. Which of the following motives is more believable for the ban:

1) To cause the animals as little suffering as possible, according to the best of our knowledge as living in modern western societies.

2) An expression of being both "anti-semitic" AND "anti-muslim" simultanously.

Peace.
