funny, i recall my dad coming home from the doctors with a brown envelope containing 2 white sugar lumps containing polio vaccine. me and my bro popped them in our mouths

really cant remember how old i would have been, i will have to try and research, if thats even possible

i was a kid, and it would have been early 1970s i guess. dont know at what age they were doled out to kids

i dont even know when sugar lumps took over from the needle, or whether they are jabs again - are they mouth drops?

i read that measles was already on the decrease when they introduced the vaccine, but i dont know if the same was true of polo by the time i got mine in the 70s

When my daughter got the polio shot, her leg was inflamed where the shot was given and she started screaming until she passed out.

The dr said it was from the Tylenol I gave her. He didn't even report it as a side effect.

Measles seemed pretty common in the 1960's. I had it, so did most other kids. We had it once, stayed home from school for a week, then it was over.

I had the impression that polio was something serious. FDR paralyzed by it etc. But measles? Not worth vaccinating against that. If people then could see the headlines now, reporting that one person with measles rode a train a week ago, they would shake their heads with amazement.

What's next, they would say, flu? They would be even more amazed at our annual flu vaccine, which isn't even the right strain most of the time.

I wish all the vaccines were given on sugar cubes. Then you throw out the vaccines and say you gave them. Of course that's at least one reason they don't do that any more.

I had all my shots and I had German measles when I was 5 and measles when I was 12. I don't remember when I had the shots though. That would be something I would have to try and look into. Every time I had to get a shot as a kid it would knock me out. I always felt sick afterwards and would sleep for the rest of the evening.
