So how does that work for neural tube defects? Low Folic Acid is a reason for it and pregnant women are encouraged to up their intake

I would say a moderate amount of folic acid isn't going to hurt most people so I wouldn't worry about it.

So if it lodges in the tissues, how is it possible to chelate out the residual ? I'm not finding anywhere that says you can, I have years of this toxin in my body apparently. This is really devastating news.

If you want to get toxins out, ionic foot baths are known to work. I had a relative who had mercury poisoning, had a hair analysis to confirm it and then got the mercury out through these foot baths. So they do work.

So how do you get rid of unmetabolised folic acid wall
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62934415

Hello is there anybody out there?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62934415

I have yet to deduce the answer....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1052341

It would probably depend on where in the body it accumulates and how those tissues deal with it. I don't know, I'm just thinking aloud. If it was the liver (which is the depository for most toxins) one could look into a liver cleanse? If it's fatty tissues -- losing weight through a well thought-out diet including lots of water and chelating supplements? Maybe fresh coriander leaves (cilantro) would help the cleanse?

The Methyl Cycle is the backbone of our physiology.

It's functional status determines our resistance or susceptibility to environmental toxins and microbes.

This is a confusing array of biochemistry, but suffice it to say, a defect at any one point in these interlocking cycles will inevitably affect the remaining pathways, and your overall health will then suffer.

Methyl Cycle abnormalities explain why you are sick from environmental toxins while the guy next door is just fine, why you are autistic while your fraternal twin brother is not. While we cannot change your DNA,

if we know your weak links we can create "nutritional workarounds" - we can supplement alternative pathways or withhold from your diet molecules that you cannot handle.

If we do not address the Methyl Cycle abnormalities that underlie unexplained or chronic illness - well then the illnesses will remain chronic and unexplained, because it is the Methyl Cycle Abnormalities that predisposed you to ill health.

The methyl cycle is dependent on folate.

Synthetic ascorbic acid is in around 99% of vitamin C supplements. It's a dirty little secret not many people know about.

So if you think you're taking actual vitamin C, then you better think again because you are not. You're taking a chemical concoction that's concocted in some secret lad on the east coast. Good luck finding pills that are ascorbic acid free.

The hook on why the can call it vitamin C is because they claim it's been proven that ascorbic acid in any form wards off scurvy.
So those C pills you're popping are worthless. In fact they're bad for your health.
 Quoting: Dudeman

I'm no medical doctor or genius but I can't seem to find ascorbic acid listed anywhere on the LiveOn Labs Lypo-Spheric vitamin C packs.

They are probably on borrowed time.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 61877188

The hook on pretty much all vitamins is they are dead sterile nutrients, if they contain any actual organic compounds at all. This is very bad. Humans are designed to consume live or freshly killed or picked foods.
The whole industry is pretty much worthless and in this day and age you can easily get access to a balanced diet in this country.
I've stopped taking bottled vitamins long ago after finding out about what's actually in them and the havoc they can reak on a persons system.

So if you thing you need some vitimin C, eat an orange, you'll get plenty of that naturally occurring ascorbic acid that they claim will save you from scurvy. and you'll be far more healthy for doing so.

Supplements are a dirty, dirty business, stay away IMO.
 Quoting: Dudeman

OK yeah I agree. Guess I'm still evolving. Wish I had the time and space to grow my own food. Can't afford to buy all organic.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 61877188

Just do the best you can. Eat fresh when you can. And frozen is not bad either when fresh doesn't look that good. I don't worry about organic because I am not convinced it is better than regular. Do not stress about this because that is what will make you sick.

5 Myths About Pregnancy Nutrition – #5: Folic Acid Supplements Are Safe

Folic acid is not the same as folate
Folic acid is a chemical not normally found in foods or the human body. Folic acid can be converted into usable forms of folate, but that conversion is limited in humans.

And, folic acid does not cross the placenta like natural folate.
Studies show that consuming too much folic acid (from supplements) can lead to high levels of unmetabolized folic acid in the blood.

In fact, doses as low as 400 mcg/d – the amount recommended by mainstream health authorities – can cause this to happen.

Since most common multivitamins contain folic acid and not folate, you may have to order folate from the internet. At the time of this writing, several companies sell naturally occurring folate supplements, including Solgar, Metagenics and KAL.
How do you know if it has folate instead of folic acid?

Check the label. If it says “folic acid” anywhere in the ingredients, you don’t want it.

If it says “folate”, “5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate”, “L-methylfolate” or “Metfolin”, it’s safe.

Stop taking supplements in general. They are crap unless they are a whole food like spirulina or wheat grass.

For proper folate, eat RAW SUNFLOWER SEEDS. I make a mylk out of them and drink it daily. I also use them for a salad dressing. Here's my recipes. BTW, I've been vegan for over 24 years and have a healthy child. I was a raw foodist while pregnant and took only spirulina as a supplement. No stretch marks, body like a teen :)

Here's the Sunny Mylk recipe:

1/4 Cup of raw sunflower seeds
1/4 tsp. mineral salt (Real Salt)
1-2 Tablespoons of agave nectar. You can use honey but sometimes it makes the mylk taste weird.
5-6 Cups of water and some ice

Blend everything in a blender and store in a jar in the fridge. Enjoy!

Sunflower Dressing:

1/4 Cup of raw sunflower seeds
1/2-1 tsp. mineral salt
2 lemons peeled
1 Tablespoon of agave or an orange for sweetness
1/4 Cup of olive oil
1 Tablespoon of herbs
2 Cups of water

Blend in a blender and store in a glass jar in the fridge. Enjoy!!!
Lose your mind so you can find it again.

Re: Check your vitamins for "Folic Acid" and if present -- toss them! Government poisoning you since 1998 with this.
[link to mthfr.net]

MTHFR is a very common genetic defect that affects approximately 1 in 4 people seriously and nearly 1 in 2 people mildly.

The MTHFR gene has a simple, but highly critical, function surrounding how your body utilizes folic acid and other forms of folate.

Those with the variant of MTHFR called C667T have a 40% to 60% decreased ability to produce the body’s most active form of folate called methylfolate.

Methylfolate is a critical nutrient affecting neurotransmitter production, DNA regulation, immunity and and the cardiovascular system. Indirectly, methylfolate affects hormone levels and detoxification.

Ask your doctor today to order a MTHFR genetic test and blood homocysteine level.

The beautiful thing is if you do test positive for the MTHFR C677T variant, there are countless protective and proactive measures you can apply immediately.

Take protective measures on a daily basis:

Eat organic and non-GMO foods
Reduce your intake of synthetic folic acid as the MTHFR enzyme does not convert it well to active methylfolate
Increase natural food folates found in uncooked leafy greens
Use a prenatal with active forms of folate such as methylfolate and folinic acid
Consider additional nutrients such as carnitine, CoQ10, DHA, krill oil. Probiotics, vitamin C, magnesium and phosphatidylcholine
Eat well-balanced meals with protein
If vegan, talk with your doctor about supplementing with methylcobalamin, an active form of vitamin B12, along with choline. One in five women are deficient in choline, which is a critical nutrient for brain development.
 Quoting: stillhere

I have the MTHFR full mutation +/+, i found out a year ago.

Folate deficiency and folic acid toxicity are not fun at all.

The methylation cycle and the associated body processes due to that is the BACKBONE of our physiology.

As stated above, every body system becomes affected and it's very REAL...not just some 'health marketing' scare.

My health is so screwed up, and to reverse it is not as simple as taking folate each day, once the body systems are damaged.
I have chest pains, liver problems, all major hormonal deficiencies which made me sterile at 30, my nerves are shot, bad eyesight, bad skin, bad digestion, bad kidney filteration, bone pain, gallbladder attacks....it's just endless really and it all starts with JUST ONE THING nutritionally majorally out of balance.

My family have MTHFR gene mutations and my sister had 3 children.
The first one died, still born.
The second one had cleft palate. (common MTHFR deficiency symptom)
The third baby born with a hole in it's heart.

We didn't know at the time about MTHFR.

The only thing to do is to take vitamins in their natural form so the body does not have to do any conversions to a useable form.
This helps to also safeguard against possible gene mutations that mean you might not be able to make the conversion.

I'm the same with carotene, at a genetic enzyme level i don't convert it to vitamin A - so have had vitamin A deficiency my whole life, as i'm not fond of eating raw liver!
I now take vitamin A liver oil to try to help preserve what eye health i have left.

TPTB are killing us and know it.

The gene pool is thus becoming murkier and murkier.

Watch as the next generations to come will be lucky if 20% make it to 30 without having a serious disease.

The only solution is to go back to basics - get wheat seed from a local farmer and grind it up for flour to bake bread etc with.

There's nothing healthy in the supermarkets anymore.
Not even a fucking apple that hasn't been subject to superphosphate fertilisers and chemical sprays.

Debunking the Folic Acid / Cancer Connection

By Michael A. Smith, MD

Despite lingering fears, a high intake of folic acid is not associated with an increased risk of cancer.

This new information comes from a recent meta-analysis that was performed by an international team from institutions in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia, and is published in the early online version of The Lancet.1

In a news release, the lead co-author states, "The study provides reassurance about the safety of folic acid intake, either from supplements or through fortification when taken up to 5 years.2"

Traditional Reasons for Supplementing with Folic Acid

The primary use of folic acid supplementation by conventional doctors is to treat megaloblastic anemia - a low number of large red blood cells - and to prevent neural tube defects in newborn babies.

Because of this, many countries started to fortify foods and drinks with folic acid. But then along came the cancer scare.

Research throughout the last 5 years suggested that excessive intake of folic acid could promote tumor growth and lead to a higher risk of developing cancer. So how exactly could folic acid promote cancer, if it does at all?

Well, it's essential to numerous bodily functions including methylation of vitamin B12 and DNA synthesis - which are especially important for tissues that rapidly divide. This is why gastrointestinal symptoms and anemia can all develop with a folic acid deficiency, as they both occur in rapidly dividing tissues.

So, as the theory goes, high doses of folic acid could initiate rapid cell division, involving repeated cycles of DNA synthesis, increasing the risk of DNA mutations - the hallmark of cancer.

But this is not proven and even the American Cancer Society admits it doesn't know how folic acid increases the risk of cancer . if it does at all.

Folic Acid Makes a Comeback

Researchers from the study assessed data from almost 50,000 people from 13 randomized clinical trials involving folic acid supplementation - about 25,000 taking folic acid and the other half not taking it.

They found that people who took daily folic acid for five years or less were not significantly more likely to develop cancer than those that didn't take folic acid.1

A total of 1,904 new cases of cancer were reported in the folic acid group, compared to 1,809 in the placebo group - that's 7.7% of the total folic users versus 7.3% of the total subjects in the control groups.1

The researchers went a step further in their analysis. They identified out of the data pool people taking the highest amount of daily folic acid and found that even for this group there was no increased risk of cancer over five years.1

One of the lead investigators, Dr. Robert Clarke, was optimistic about the results but he did caution that longer term trials need to be conducted before any definite conclusions are made.

The Optimal Form of Folic Acid

Bioactive folate is chemically known as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and is the predominant biologically active form of folic acid in cells, the blood, peripheral tissues, and particularly the brain.3

Until recently, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) was available only in expensive prescription medicines and medicinal food products. Now, this active form of folate, which provides increased bioavailability together with protection against homocysteine-related health problems, is available as a dietary supplement.

Since 5-MTHF is the only form of folic acid used directly by the body, it doesn't have to be converted and metabolized to be clinically useful, as does regular folic acid.3

Folic acid, as used in ordinary dietary supplements and vitamin-fortified foods, must first be converted to bioactive 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in order to be clinically effective.

These steps require several enzymes, adequate liver and gastrointestinal function, and sufficient supplies of niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), riboflavin (B2), vitamin C, serine, and zinc.3

Another advantage of 5-MTHF is that it is unlikely to mask a vitamin B12 deficiency, a shortcoming of folic acid. Folic acid, when administered as a single agent, may obscure the detection of vitamin B12 deficiency.3

The Bottom Line

So, here's what I'm getting at: Folic acid is an important component of all tissues, especially ones that rapidly divide. For this reason, we have always suggested between 200 and 400 mcg a day of folic acid, even during the so-called cancer scare of the last few years.

And wouldn't you know it - the "scary cancer risk" hype appears to be on its way out or is at least being seriously challenged these days.

So what does this mean to you? As far as we're concerned, feel free to keep supplementing with folic acid daily.

Thanks for the information. I have pernicious anemia and being treated by a physician. Treated with folic acid, vitamin B12 and B6 for many years. I think most doctors are unaware the different between folic and folate. As of yet, haven't had any problems associated with taking folic for many years. I will stop taking folic and start taking folate.

Folates are important because they are very close to low-level RNA and DNA synthesis functions in the metabolic cycle, and being mammals, this seems rather important for us. The whole thing basically revolves at a biomolecular level about moving a carbon atom around. Go figure. Always the simplest things, isn't it?

So, here's what I'm getting at: Folic acid is an important component of all tissues,
especially ones that rapidly divide.

"The Bottom Line

So, here's what I'm getting at: Folic acid is an important component of all tissues,"

The 'bottom line' is actually that FOLATE is an important part of all tissues, NOT FOLIC ACID.

One major point in this thread is distinguishing between the two.

It's akin to the difference between real butter and 'i can't believe its not butter'.

The body recognises one : Folate
The body HAS TO COVERT folic acid to folate using MTHFR gene enzyme (which up to half the population has mutated (and most don't realise) and therefore cannot make the conversion to BIO_ORGANIC FOLATE)

Think of bleach - it's essentially made from salt - converted in a lab to be a corrosive detergent.

Would you drink bleach, afterall salt is fine to eat right?

NO, Yet we eat folic acid, which is also lad derived, NOT biologically recognised well and we call it 'essential for all tissues'...which is an outright LIE.

Regarding studies - find out who conducted them.
FOLLOW THE MONEY.
FIND OUT WHO FUNDED THESE STUDIES.

Most products are lab derived as it gives chemical 'stability and longer shelf life.

It's made into folic acid because that chemical form is resistant to oxidation. Your intestines have to work overtime to convert to suitable chemical form. That's the bad part.

Just eat more foods I listed above (and some I didn't list). I left off black-eyed peas for a reason, because those are best when slow cooked to hell, and with added bacon, and that's not a good health recommendation.

You probably hate lentils, but that would clear it completely. The good thing is that you have 13 different types to pick from. tounge

You have a genetic 'deficiency' that affects the epithelial cells of your intestines (more or less.) That affects your ability to digest (literally) the "crap" that we add to "bad" foods to make them look "good." But, you don't have to worry about that by eating natural stuff. :)

So you want to be healthy, fight off disease, you take your vitamins dutifully---

Yet, did you know that the Folic Acid in your fortified cereal, bread, and vitamins even that cherry Emergen-C is poison.

Colon cancer on the rise, Prostate Cancer, Folic Acid is a man made crystalline structure not found anywhere in nature. It can only be converted into Folate the natural form in tiny amounts. The excess stays in your body and excites the growth of precancerous cells.

Excessive Folic Acid is Becoming a Health Concern

A 2010 report states, “"The more we learn about folic acid, the more it's clear that giving it to everyone has very real risks," says folic acid researcher David Smith, PhD, a professor of pharmacology at the University of Oxford in England…The risk experts worry about most: colon cancer.

Last year, health officials in Chile reported that hospitalization rates for colon cancer among men and women age 45 and older more than doubled in their country since fortification was introduced in 2000.

In 2007, Joel Mason, MD, director of the Vitamins and Carcinogenesis Laboratory at the Tufts University School of Medicine, described a study of the United States and Canada suggesting that rates of colon cancer rose — following years of steady decline — in the late 1990s (around the time our food was being fortified)” [13].

The same report also states, “Other research links high doses to lung and prostate cancers. In one study conducted in Norway, which doesn't fortify foods, supplementation with 800 mcg of folic acid (plus B12 and B6) daily for more than 3 years raised the risk of developing lung cancer by 21 percent.

Another, in which men took either folic acid or a placebo, showed those consuming 1,000 mcg of folic acid daily had more than twice the risk of prostate cancer.

And a new worry recently came to light when scientists discovered the liver has limited ability to metabolize folic acid into folate — which means any excess continues circulating in the bloodstream. "Unlike folate, folic acid isn't found in nature, so we don't know the effect of the excess," says Smith.

Indeed, many scientists have grown increasingly concerned about mounting research — including a study published last winter in the Journal of the American Medical Association — suggesting that all the extra folic acid might increase your odds of developing cancer” [13].

This company (Doctor's Research) is awesome. I found them a couple of months ago. I've been telling everyone about them in person and on GLP. It's the first vitamin company I have found that is pure food. They're a step above Standard Process. Their website also has a Standard Process equivalent chart which is very helpful. Most supplements are manufactured by a handful of companies who sell them to other companies who put their own label on them.

Damn, I've been on Forceval for year and that contains 400mcg Folic Acid :(. Also taking lots of other supplements but they don't contain it...but should I stop taking them too? I mean I have been taking them for diabetic neuropathy as they are supposed to work.
