But I think the article is trying to say that the pilot saw a doctor for a medical reason. The doctor wrote a note for the pilot to take to work that explained that the pilot should not be flying because of medical reasons.

Instead of taking the note to work and explaining that he was too depressed to work, the pilot decided to work anyway.

While at work the depression may have been too much for him so he decided to end it.

You're supposed to take the note to your employer and stay away from work. The doctors aren't allowed to give it to the employer. In fact, they can't even write down what's wrong with their patient. "Based on my medical expertise, I declare that this guy/girl should get XXX days off from work".

Krankschreibung might be "medical certificate". Sick leave (or any kind of leave) means he's not at work.

It means a "Doctors sickness certificate" which is required to obtain sick leave from your employer. If the employee does not request sick leave from the employer but instead ignores the doctors advice and does not inform the employer, that is precisely concealing the illness from the employer.

Now, it could be that he had some minor ailment, perhaps a minor chest infection or similar, or it could equally be that he was having some kind of meltdown. It all depends of what exact malady the sick note was for.
