I doubt it. Russia isn't strong enough by itself to handle 2 fronts at the same time. And there's no way the US is going to let the Syria situation go unchallenged.

I remember reading how the Third World War would initiate. That it would not mirror the Second, but rather the First. This may seem like a stretch, but could the assassination of Alexander Zakharchenko be the 21st century version of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand?

This action could be the Casus Belli we’ve been expecting for four years. #Russian law makers are taking every chance to use this action to justify an operation in #Ukraine now in their media. All the units are in place and the #Russian military is ready.

We will be watching this situation carefully as it unfolds. We and most other informed observers of this conflict have always known that at some point #Putin would want to engage in a broader conflict in #Ukraine. No one knows when and we’ve come close before. This could be the 1

Here's a monkeywrench, wouldn't be interesting if the Kremlin sanctioned the hit in order to give them license to launch their war on Ukraine.

Think it's too far fetched, read Clancy's Red Storm Rising on how that all went down and you could see the possibility.

Just a thought.

Israel has always been a prize of Russia, but I see it two fold...Russia needs to reduce the US/NATO presence and threat on their direct border and send a strong message. Russia in cohoots with Syria/Iran/Hezbollah and China would be a very potent threat to Israel and the US in the region.

That is very true....In the Russian economy you do not mobilize 300,000 troops, hundreds of tanks, mobilize several military districts just for an 'exercise' and then bring everyone home and go back to watching the game....just way to expensive...there is MUCH more behind this so called 'exercise' and this event today could very well be the reason.

I could absolutely see Russia kill this guy themselves and then blame it on Ukraine to get the game started....coupled with events in Syria...this is a giant event and should be monitored. Just my opinion. :)

Russia knows that too. They can't afford to commit 1/2 of their forces to that front and the prize isn't worth that large an expenditure. Especially when that amount of force won't really be needed.

As for China, I've never seen them as an integral member of the final push. They have a role yes. But it's a singular one with their own private objective.

Again, I could be wrong but that's how I've always sensed it would be.
