Iran Said To Obtain Four Nuclear Bombs From CIS Republic


According to reports published in the Jerusalem Post on 9 and 10 April 1998, Iran purchased 2-4 tactical nuclear weapons in Kazakhstan in late 1991, as the Soviet Union was collapsing. The report is based on documents which claim to summarize discussions between Iranian government officials and members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards about the weapons and their maintenance. The documents were delivered to the Israeli Labor Party by an exiled Iranian scientist. According to the report, in one of the documents, the deputy head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards reports to the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency, Rezi Amrullahi, that the Guards have obtained 'two war materiel [sic] of nuclear nature' from Russia. In another document from 2 January 1992, a senior Revolutionary Guard official cites an engineer named 'Turkan,' who says that nuclear warheads are being stored in the Lavizan military camp in the Teheran area. In the document, 'Turkan' says that he is awaiting the arrival of Russian experts who have the necessary skills to remove safety devices from the weapons which make them inoperable. 'Turkan' also complains about the 'lazy, greedy, and egotistical' Argentine nuclear technicians who had earlier been hired to work on the warheads. According to the documents, Iran paid $25 million for the tactical nuclear weapons. While Israeli officials have confirmed that they have the documents, they have refused to comment on their authenticity. James Rubin, spokesman for the US Department of State, told the Jerusalem Post that back in 1992 the United States had investigated reports that Iran had purchased nuclear weapons in Kazakhstan, and determined 'there was no evidence to substantiate such claims.' Rubin said that while the United States remains 'concerned' about Iranian efforts to acquire a nuclear capability, 'we have no information suggesting that Iran is in possession of nuclear warheads acquired from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan.'[1]
