If minimum wage equates to 30k a year, doesn't that mean that the only people living below the poverty line will be the unemployed or welfare recipients (assuming this catches on with other states)?

This is going to wreak havoc on the economy.

What good is a mandated "living wage" if no one is hiring? Next, they'll make it illegal to close a business.

I predict a new wave of "family" businesses…people taking care of their own...outsiders need not apply!

It also creates more fierce competition for those minimum wage jobs...so the lowlifes who used to be able to gain employment will be passed over for better quality candidates.

Blacks will do much worse in this scenario...if that's even possible. Then pretty soon racial quotas will have to be put in place.

The only fallacy to this idea is that the system is built on the idea that MOST people will not do that. There are countries that have a high percentage of college educated adults because the government provides higher level education. But guess what, you still need MORE low paying jobs then you do high paying jobs. Coincidentally these countries also have high suicide rates.

The problem is money. As long as we use money there will be impoverished. That's how money works, it creates poverty. The by-product is some have wealth. It can't work the other way around.

Take it one step further and consider that a business becomes a private club. Therefore, many laws don't apply. Patron's can only be invited in. Its a loop hole that businesses may use to get around regulations...

Re: Prominent San Francisco Bookstore to Close, Citing Minimum Wage Increase
Bookstores are still closing everywhere ... even where there was NO CHANGE in the minimum wage.

Fewer and fewer people buy printed books to begin with ... and Amazon has picked up a fairly high percentage of the overall market for printed books, WITH NO NEED FOR A PHYSICAL BOOKSTORE!!

I follow the printed book industry as part of my overall business since I deal with a paper maker who makes paper for both hardback and paperback books (they do NOT make newsprint or magazine paper at the operations I follow so that is not a factor I am looking at). Their paper volume continues to decline, fairly steeply ... which is imo a very direct indication of the health of the printed book business.

I don't care how long a book store has been in business, or how prominent it is in a local area ... as more and more people stop buying printed books THEIR business is going to suffer, and suffer until it becomes very hard to make a profit with a store front book selling business.

Yes ... the raise in minimum wage probably finally made the owners realize the writing THAT WAS ALREADY ON THE WALL THAT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO BELIEVE ... but if their business was so bad that they couldn't turn a profit on high margin books they were selling THEN THEY WEREN'T SELLING THAT MANY BOOKS ANYWAY.

Buggy Whip manufacturers had a tough time after Henry Ford, and others, came out with their newfangled "automobiles" and "trucks". Same kind of technology change driving out a line of businesses that had been around for HUNDREDS of Years!!

I know when I buy a actual touch and feel printed book anymore I almost always buy from Amazon ... and I am sure the same thing is happening in San Francisco.

Of course buy customers are supposed to buy the books that they read. Clearly that was not occurring enough for the book store to pay $15 hr. in the most expensive city in America.

Book stores are already set to fail! Who buys 20$ paper books from the book stores these days with the worldwide web, digital books, tablets and Iphones?

Let's face it, 4$ an hour wage would keep bookstores open for a little while longer but that is called slave wage.

Who wants slave wage back in the U.S.?

I mean how much is the price of a room in a U.S. city?

As a former small business owner I would do the same. Higher wages unfortunatelly don't translate to higher production. Lazy bastards just want money while the business owner still has to pay lease, utilities, etc. Fuck them.
