Anonymous Coward User ID: 68885272 ![]() 04/10/2015 02:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.collective-evolution.com] Quoting: SpaceCommand A team at IBM recently developed what they call a High Concentration Photo Voltaic Thermal (HCPVT) system that is capable of concentrating the power of 2,000 suns, they are even claiming to be able to concentrate energy safely up to 5,000X, thats huge. The process of trapping the sunlight produces water that can be used to produce filtered drinkable water, or used for other things like air conditioning etc. Scientists envision that the HCPVT system could provide sustainable energy and fresh water to communities all around the world. Each 1cmX1cm chip can convert 200-250 watts, on average, over a typical eight-hour day in a sunny region. In the HCPVT system, instead of heating a building, the 90 degree Celsius water will pass through a porous membrane distillation system where it is then vaporized and desalinated. Such a system could provide 30-40 liters of drinkable water per square meter of receiver area per day, while still generating electricity with a more than 25 percent yield or two kilowatts hours per day. A large installation would provide enough water for a small town. (2) More: [link to www.collective-evolution.com] meh Current solar is getting cheap, and it could already power the entire planet. Cost is more important than efficiency at this point. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68813233 hmmm cant decide if I should praise their efforts or condem them for past sins . It's a corporation if any world leader wanted to round up any ethnic group and put them into camps and needed a product IBM sold to do it. IBM would provide the service if the price was right. All corporations would the role of a corporation is to make money that's it. |

Cost is more important than efficiency at this point. Do you know how it got relatively cheap? By investing into it and refining production. These offer a bit more than your standard solar system and can be more promising in the future. I suspect a smaller foot print? |

Yes, it's beyond reason that our otherwise brilliant techy scientists haven't been able to get the solar thing functioning far more efficiently. No doubt an arrangement with the oil barons' benefit. Tell you what though, I know a couple of people who went from rags to millionaires flogging gov subsidised clean energy products. Looks like everyone's benefiting except the consumer. Plus ca change... |
