200 watt per square centimeter??

Is this even possible??
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68886070

well, no...

you still need at least one square meter of area to collect 1000 watts of solar energy

more than 1 kilowatt per square meter is impossible, that's the maximum of radiation that Earth gets

that means that even if we get super efficient solar panels, a solar facility that can generate 1 gigawatt of electricity would need to have an area of at least 1 square kilometer

What about a grid of panels? Maybe if everyone had the panels and they were connected some how, that surface area could be achieved?

A team at IBM recently developed what they call a High Concentration Photo Voltaic Thermal (HCPVT) system that is capable of concentrating the power of 2,000 suns, they are even claiming to be able to concentrate energy safely up to 5,000X, that’s huge.

The process of trapping the sunlight produces water that can be used to produce filtered drinkable water, or used for other things like air conditioning etc. Scientists envision that the HCPVT system could provide sustainable energy and fresh water to communities all around the world.

“Each 1cmX1cm chip can convert 200-250 watts, on average, over a typical eight-hour day in a sunny region. In the HCPVT system, instead of heating a building, the 90 degree Celsius water will pass through a porous membrane distillation system where it is then vaporized and desalinated. Such a system could provide 30-40 liters of drinkable water per square meter of receiver area per day, while still generating electricity with a more than 25 percent yield or two kilowatts hours per day. A large installation would provide enough water for a small town.” (2)

People are finally using their brians.

20 years ago when solar was really starting I wondered why they didn't magnify with lenses or mirrors.

We're a bunch of dumbasses.
 Quoting: Chip

the surface of the concentrating lenses must have the same area that the panels would need to have

the area must be the same, to get the same amount of sunlight over it

so, the lenses must be cheaper than the panels, and resist the wheater without cracking or losing focus

otherwise, it's not worth to replace the panels by lenses that focus the light into a smaller panel

Incorrect, that maybe the maximum in a very narrow frequency band.

Even the energy just in the low IR, that which can be extracted by heating a black radiator, that can be measured over 1 KWM/M^2 using simple calorimetry with water.

It's not, folk have been doing it DIY for years like this.

Crack the top metal can off a power transistor, then use a magnifying glass to concentrate the sun on the die. You get juice out.

Re: IBM Solar Collector Magnifies Sun By 2000X – These Could Provide Power To The Entire Planet!
If the extraterrestrial solar radiation is 1367 watts per square meter (the value when the earth-sun distance is 1 astronomical unit), then the direct sunlight at the earth's surface when the sun is at the zenith is about 1050 W/m2, but the total amount (direct and indirect from the atmosphere) hitting the ground is around 1120 W/m2.[3]
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

6 hours of sunlight would give 6300 wattHours/m2/day. Or 6.3KWhours/m2/day

There are 10,000 sq cm in a square meter.

Therefore, maximum energy available if 100% efficient is 0.6 wattHours/cm2/day, not 2 KWH/cm2/day. Off by a factor of 3000.

IVANPAH DRY LAKE, Calif. – Workers at a state-of-the-art solar plant in the Mojave Desert have a name for birds that fly through the plant's concentrated sun rays — "streamers," for the smoke plume that comes from birds that ignite in midair.
Federal wildlife investigators who visited the BrightSource Energy plant last year and watched as birds burned and fell, reporting an average of one "streamer" every two minutes, are urging California officials to halt the operator's application to build a still-bigger version.
The investigators want the halt until the full extent of the deaths can be assessed. Estimates per year now range from a low of about a thousand by BrightSource to 28,000 by an expert for the Center for Biological Diversity environmental group.

The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project is a concentrating solar power (CSP) plant being developed near Tonopah in Nye County, Nevada, USA
The Crescent Dunes CSP is built on about 1,600 acres (647.5ha) of public land administered by the US Bureau of Land Management. It is designed for an operational life of 30 years.
The two main components of the facility include a large circular field consisting of 17,170 heliostat mirrors and a central receiving tower to which the solar radiation reflected by the heliostat mirrors are focused. The plant uses a conventional steam turbine to produce electricity.
Thermal storage tanks on the tower store hot and cold liquid salt heat transfer fluid. A hybrid cooling system comprising an air-cooled condenser is also installed.
