Probably because they would be looking for a huge settlement from Baltimore. They're saying all the obligatory stuff about not wanting the riots, blah blah blah, to make sure they stay in everyone's good graces, but they're going to be filing the same suit that Mike Brown's family just filed when the dust settles, and this would damage their case.

As far as why it wasn't reported on, the media wants the riots, and they like the cause, and this information would only serve to diffuse them. Of course, the looters couldn't possibly care less, but they need a relatively sympathetic "victim" to give them the excuse to burn shit down and steal stuff.

Figures this would be another severely compromised poster child.
