This is a very basic introduction

We don’t have the answer. We just have a lot of recordings,” said Mark McDonald, president of Whale Acoustics, a company that specializes in the sonic monitoring of cetaceans.

McDonald and his collaborators first noticed the change eight years ago, when they kept needing to recalibrate the automated song detectors used to track blue whales off the California coast. The detectors are triggered by songs that match a particular waveform. Every year, McDonald had to set them lower.


Since then, he and Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers Sarah Melnick and John Hildebrand have gathered thousands of blue whale recordings made since the 1960s, spanning populations from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific to the East Indian Ocean. Their analysis, published in October in Endangered Species Research, shows that the songs’ tonal frequency is falling every year by a few fractions of a hertz.

“It’s a fascinating finding,” said John Calombokidis, a blue whale expert at the Cascadia Research Collective. “It’s even more remarkable, given that the songs themselves differ in different oceans. There seem to be these distinct populations, yet they’re all showing this common shift.”

According to McDonald, the first explanation to come to mind involved noise pollution caused by increased shipping traffic. Ambient ocean noise has increased by more than 12 decibels since the mid-20th century. But if whales were trying to be heard above the din, they’d sing at higher rather than lower pitches, said McDonald.

It’s also possible the whales are responding to changing dynamics in how sound travels through water that’s become warmer as Earth heats up, absorbing more carbon dioxide and growing more acidic than before. “But those factors are so small, and this is such a huge shift in frequency,” said McDonald.



“That’s the first place to look for an answer, but it doesn’t fit more-localized patterns. The population of blue whales off the U.S. west coast hasn’t shown a dramatic upwards trend in numbers, but its pitch is declining,” said Calombokidis.

Those whales are the best-studied of all blue whale populations, and their song pitch has dropped by 31 percent since the late 1960s.

Because only male blue whales sing, the answer may involve mate choice and sexual selection. The researchers hypothesize that as larger, ostensibly more virile whales tend to produce deeper songs, other males may be trying to emulate them, just as human guys might lower their voices when trying to impress a woman.



Other fish have had problems spawning due to estrogen levels in the water-I would suggest that it cannot help the whales-as only the male 'sings'...

Theories as to why this isa occuring include sexual selection, increasing ocean noise, increasing whale body size post whaling, global warming, interference from other animal sounds and post-whaling era increases in abundance. None of the commonly suggested hypotheses were found to provide a full explanation; however, increasing population size post whaling provides an intriguing and testable hypothesis that recovery is altering the sexually selected tradeoff for singing males between song amplitude (the ability to be heard at a greater distance) and songfrequency (the ability to produce songs of lower pitch)

This is the reality that whales and other marine mammals face because of human-caused noise in the ocean, whether it's the sound of airguns used in oil exploration or subs and ships emitting sonar. Manmade sound waves can drown out the noises that marine mammals rely on for their very survival, causing serious injury and even death

Some systems operate at more than 235 decibels, producing sound waves that can travel across tens or even hundreds of miles of ocean. During testing off the California coast, noise from the Navy's main low-frequency sonar system was detected across the breadth of the northern Pacific Ocean.

By the Navy's own estimates, even 300 miles from the source, these sonic waves can retain an intensity of 140 decibels -- a hundred times more intense than the level known to alter the behavior of large whales.

There is no question that sonar injures and kills whales and dolphins.

The Navy’s most widely used sonar systems operate in the mid-frequency range. Evidence of the danger caused by these systems surfaced dramatically in 2000, when whales of four different species stranded themselves on beaches in the Bahamas. Although the Navy initially denied responsibility, the government's investigation established that mid-frequency sonar caused the strandings.

After the incident, the area's population of Cuvier's beaked whales nearly disappeared, leading researchers to conclude that they either abandoned their habitat or died at sea. Similar mass strandings have occurred in the Canary Islands, Greece, Madeira, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii and other sites around the globe.

Low Frequency Active Sonar (LFAS) was developed by the United States Navy to detect foreign submarines. In contrast to passive sonar, by which the Navy 'listens' for the sounds of distant ships, active sonar is a relatively new technology in military respects. LFAS works by emitting intense, low frequency sounds that echo off solid objects in water. The echoes are monitored by Navy ships to determine whether an object is a rock, a school of fish, or a submarine.

The speakers used by LFAS emit sounds as loud as 240dB and at frequencies of about 100 to 600Hz. In humans, exposure to sounds above 140dB cause hearing damage and sounds of 160dB cause instant deafness. Because low frequency sounds travel farther in water than sounds at higher frequencies, a ship operating LFAS can spread noise throughout thousands of square kilometres.

Even though sound acts differently in water than in air, it is fairly obvious that sounds of the magnitude emitted by LFAS is many times louder than the level known to disturb whales and dolphins. Whales and dolphins communicate with sound signals ranging in magnitude from 160 to 190dB.

Research has shown that artificially generated acoustic noise affects whales not only physiologically, but also psychologically. At intensities of 120dB, bowhead and grey whales begin to show avoidance behaviour. Humpback whales show cessation in 'singing' when exposed to 155dB, and sperm and pilot whales stop singing altogether when exposed to intensities of 220dB.

After military exercises involving the use of LFAS, beached whales were found washed up nearby and necropsies showed that they died from severe auditory trauma. In general, loud sounds cause whales to exhibit panic behaviour. Whales, like humans, also have air-filled sinuses and cavities of the middle ear. So when they dive to deeper waters (i.e. higher pressure) or ascend (i.e. lower pressure), they have to equalize the pressure inside their ears. When whales are panicked, they may dive or ascend too fast, and their equalization mechanism cannot work fast enough, and will cause pain, broken eardrums, bleeding in the ear, and death. Also, as loud noises essentially act like pressure waves, they can cause the same problems.

Resonance is not the only way whale populations are affected. Any man-made low frequency noise of above 120 dB can cause behavioral changes in whale population.

Aside from marine mammals, other species of wildlife may be affected by low frequency noise.

Using LFAS may impair the growth and reproduction of other species such as shrimp, or change the distribution of sharks and threaten sea turtles and fish.

Certain high frequency noises can damage their hearing, thus making it impossible for them to live. According to Marine Scientists certain
sounds have been proven to divert whales from their migratory paths, stop some whales from singing, and to cause whales to do things they would not normally do like beach themselves.

Active Sonar was believed to have caused a massive beaching of Beaked Whales off the coast of Greece in 1996. NATO had been testing their Active Sonar System at the time, which only goes to confirm the risks of doing so.

LFA

LFA stands for Low Frequency Active Sonar. In order to evade the Environmental Protection Act, the U.S. Navy has conducted testing of the LFA in secret and led the push for the use of using the Active Sonar even though they knew full well the damaging effects the noise may have on the Whale's lives and populations throughout the world.

Active Sonar technology uses sounds to detect Submarines in the ocean's all over the world. The sounds this technology emits can kill or injure several different types of marine mammals, including dolphins, Sea Turles and whales.

In 2000, a U.S. Navy Battle Group used Active Sonar in the area where several whales of four different species beached themselves in the Bahamas.


At first the Navy denied their Sonar Technology was to blame until their own investigation found severe acoustic trauma had caused hemorrhaging around the whales' eyes and ears.

A study by the government concluded with much certainty that the whales' injuries were caused by mid-frequency sonar that ships in the area had been using.


Marine Scientists believe that whales' and dolphins often times beach themselves after being injured by the sonar.

Ship noise in the Pacific Ocean has doubled every decade over the past 40 years and the global shipping fleet is expected to double in size by 2025, after doubling between 1965 and 2003, the report calculates.

Airguns used in seismic surveys generate "colossal" sounds peaking at up to 259 decibels and can be repeated every 10 seconds for months. These sounds travelled more than 3,000 km from the source. There are 90 seismic survey ships in the world, the report states, and a quarter of them are in use on any given day.

In addition, there are an estimated 300 naval sonar systems worldwide able to generate pressure sound waves of more than 235 decibels. Pings this loud are over one billion times more intense than the 145 decibel upper limit deemed safe for humans.

Earlier this fall while working off southern Turkey and the Greek island of Rhodos, the Odyssey crew counted 6 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) vessels within a 12-mile radius in International waters. From 10am to 12pm we detected loud sonar pulses through our acoustic array at 15 - 30 second intervals.

Abstract:

A Harmonic Resonance theory is presented as an alternative to the conventional paradigm of neurocomputation known as the Neuron Doctrine, whereby the neuron is conceived as a kind of feature detector whose response is determined by its synaptic input through a spatial receptive field, and visual processing is described as a feed-forward progression through hierarchical layers of visual representation.

This concept is shown to be inadequate to account for the holistic global aspects of perception identified by Gestalt theory, including such properties as emergence, reification, and invariance in recognition.

Harmonic resonance is shown to exhibit these same properties not as specialized circuits to account for those properties individually, but as natural properties of the resonance itself. I propose therefore that harmonic resonance is the long-sought and elusive computational mechanism behind Gestalt theory.

Vibrational Basics

A note is a single tone, pitch or frequency.
A doubling of the frequency of any note produces a higher note with the same pitch, as in middle C and high C on a piano. this is known as an Octave.

Octaves go on forever above and below our musical scale, they are simply halving's or doublings of frequency. One drum beat per second is what middle C sounds like 8 Octaves down.

By some strange coincidence, there are 50 octaves from a beat of one per second (the lowest range of the human heartbeat) to the frequency of visible light.

A beat or Rhythm is a couple octaves below what we hear as music and light and color are a few dozen octaves above music.

A chord is any two notes or pitches played simultaneously.
All chords produce certain sounds which are unique because whenever two notes are played together, a third note or beat is also heard. this third note is not inherent in either note but only as a synergetic consequence of their unity, constructed in the brain.


Two notes played together produce a third, three notes played together produce three other notes from the various combination of two notes, four notes produces six new tones, five produces eleven, and so on. The notes may not always sound like musical pitches because their frequencies may be below 16 cycles per second, the minimum frequency that sounds like a note to our ears.

The secondary notes (children, or 2nd level 'iteration' (repeating sequence) of the first notes) interact with one another and create tertiary notes (grandchildren or 3rd level iterations) and so on, to infinity, so that the combination becomes rather astounding.

Standing Waves - sound and form
When a vibration or wave reflects off of something, such as another wave, it can interfere with its own reflection. The interference is alternately constructive or destructive as the two waves move past each other. This creates a standing wave . Only waves with certain frequencies can create standing waves. This is because the distance from one node to the next must always be some fraction of the total length (one half, one third, etc.).

all objects have a frequency or set of frequencies with which they naturally resonate when struck, plucked, strummed or somehow disturbed. Each of the natural frequencies at which an object vibrates is associated with a standing wave pattern. When an object is forced into resonance vibrations at one of its natural frequencies, it vibrates in a manner such that a standing wave is formed within the object. So the natural frequencies of an object are merely the harmonic frequencies at which standing wave patterns are established within the object.

These standing wave patterns represent the lowest energy vibrational modes of the object or complex system. While there are countless way by which an object can vibrate (each associated with a specific frequency), objects favor only a few specific modes or patterns of vibrating.
The favored modes (patterns) of vibration are those which result in the highest amplitude vibrations with the least input of energy.

Test this: Step into your bathroom and close the door. If it's a bathroom with lots of tile it should be quite resonant.
Hum a melody or a variety of different notes .... you will notice one note seems to "Echo" considerably longer and sound louder than the others. This note is the resonant pitch of your bathroom. The room wants to vibrate along with that note - and the note travels thru the surfaces with less loss of energy and therefore echoes louder. This can be used for psycho-acoustical effects by testing and then playing a song in the Root-Note of a room, so that the room itself acts as an amplifier for the vibrational structure of the song.

41 Octaves above Sound - notes have color

We hear about ten octaves of sound and see about one octave of light with our eyes.
Because going up an octave is doubling, each octave has a bandwidth (range of frequencies) that is as large as the sum of all bandwidths of the preceding octaves (similar to each time a population doubles). This means that visible light, 41 octaves up from from the middle of our hearing range, is an octave with a bandwidth many times greater than that of all 10 octaves of the hearing range. So the human eye has a very wide range even though it sees in only one octave.

To view and contemplate the entire known electromagnetic spectrum as a whole, and in terms of music and acoustics, or of color theory, is not a new concept.

It has found expression in the “music of the spheres” and other fanciful philosophies.



The new concept here is to actually delineate the considerable volume of information about the vibration rates of all things in their various states, and simply see if there is a pattern.

There is a pattern and a grand one. An apparently never-ending symphony on a cosmic scale, arranged in fifty or more octaves, literally and constantly forms, maintains, and destroys the universe.

Various octaves both above and below the fundamental red alpha-line vibration of hydrogen are the constants of proton spin and precession, mitochondrial vibration, as well as the Earth’s fundamental resonance, and a score of other octaves with applications in every field of the sciences.

Significant harmonics of these hydrogen octaves determine calcium, sodium, and other ion vibration frequencies, the fluorescence of metals and more, in a pattern related to the periodic table.

Today, we have statistical demonstration of at least some of the principles of harmonics and multivariant analysis, which are identical with those of acoustics and music.

The twelve-fold division of phenomena into fields or realms is very popular among all cultures, because twelve is the most harmonically practical way to divide the circle.

We have twelve notes in the chromatic scale, twelve months and signs, and twelve meridians and twelve categories of medicines in the traditional Chinese medical system.

In the probability theory of multivariant analysis there are “some-teen” variables or constants possible, other values being determined from that limited number.

Likewise we see, almost universally, five primary protagonists active within the twelve-fold field, and seven, or perhaps sometimes nine, total protagonists counting lesser ones.

Thus the five or seven notes, planets, metals, days, electron levels, or particles.

Investigative journalist Joe Bullard returned to discuss the mysteries surrounding Florida's Coral Castle and its creator Ed Leedskalnin. The Castle and its gardens feature thousands of tons of coral rock that Leedskalnin, a frail man who weighed just 100 pounds, carved into artistic yet functional objects such as tables and chairs, a sundial and a huge perfectly balanced gate. While he made and moved these objects in secret, he claimed he used the same technology that the Egyptians built the pyramids with.

Leedskalnin said he built Coral Castle for his lost love Agnes who jilted him back in Latvia, but Bullard suggested that this tale might have been a cleverly disguised cover story for hiding his secret knowledge and scientific achievements. When Leedskalnin was in a hospital in 1951, shortly before his death, thieves stole some of his tools. Bullard believes this might have been a planned confiscation.

Leedskalnin left a message over his bedroom at the site: THE SECRET OF THE UNIVERSE IS 7129/6105195. One caller said that was the number from Leedskalnin's federal application for citizenship; another caller related the number to the "golden ratio." Bullard's book Waiting for Agnes, a fictionalized account of the Coral Castle story, incorporates the lore of Atlantis and the Bermuda Triangle into the plot.

Joe Bullard was born in Florida in 1951. He attended the University of West Florida and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1974. He found out about the Coral Castle on the television series called "In Search Of" in September of 1984. During this time he was working at Lake City Community College as Public Information Director and Professor of a newspaper class. Joe spent 10 years of research at Coral Castle and started writing "Waiting for Agnes" in February of 1995. It took him five years to get the story on paper and almost four years to publish it.
