I've been a comic book enthusiast my whole life (sad, I know), and I can tell you both very comparable. I tend to prefer the fantasy of Marvel, but you can't go wrong with DC's often dark tone. Immediately I would say both if you look hard enough.. But DC is definitely more centred around the occult to someone without previous knowledge of the comics, and that may be because they seem less inclined to hide it. It certainly is present in Marvel comics as well, i.e. Bendis' recent Ilumminati series. [May also be worth noting the parallels to be drawn between satanism and many of Marvel's huge series like Kree-Skrull Wars & Inhuman's]. Yet they do appear to be considerably less 'in your face about it', maybe not in the big budget films they've been pumping out lately, but in the traditional comics - it's a lot less evident as compared to DC.. At least in my experience. Really, DC is more thematically esoteric; plot lines, characters, even artwork, and overall more accurate in it's execution of magick. They've also historically relied on the term 'Occultism' to describe magical abilities harnessed by specific characters within the DC universe. *Not to take anything away from Marvel - I understand they've used the term in the past as well. However it's DC's consistent utilization of Demons, Cults, Conjurers, Sorceresses, and the like that take the occult cake. I'd like to think most GLPer's are aware of the occults presence in nearly every popular facet of modern entertainment though.. It should be a given at this point. |
