Police: Some whites 'freaking out' about black neighbors

I did that once. I was 21 years old and on my own for the first time. I lived in a 2 story house that had been converted into 2 apartments. The rental company's office was across the street from me. I had only been living there for a couple of months when I saw a black man walk past the window in the office one night. I was a young girl living alone and I got scared and called the police. I thought the man had broken in. What I didn't know was that only part of the house was the rental company's office. The other half was a small apartment. The man had just moved in and that's why I had never seen anyone in there before. To be honest, I would have called the police even if it had been a white man.

Turns out, the guy was a real asshole. One night a taxi pulled up and dropped off a young black girl. She was banging on his door, screaming and crying and begging him to let her in. He wouldn't open the door for her and kept yelling at her to go away. The taxi left and she was left there stranded all alone. She had nowhere to go so she sat down on the sidewalk crying her eyes out.

I opened my door and asked her if she was okay. She said he had broken up with her and wouldn't talk to her. I invited her into my house. When she got to my door she hugged me and was sobbing uncontrollably. I could tell she had been drinking because I could smell the alcohol on her breath.

I know I'm supposed to be an evil child of Satan white racist, but I made her some tea and sat with her for several hours before driving her home. She was the same age as me and the guy across the street was 40. She was a young naive girl who fell deeply in love with him and he used her and dumped her and didn't even give a damn if she was left stranded outside in a part of town that wasn't safe for a young girl to be late at night. Even if he didn't want to talk to her, he could have called another taxi for her to make sure she got home safely, but he didn't care.
