It once occurred to me that the sun looks like a hole into The Light which is behind the sky. Silly. The sun is the physical symbol for the Godhead because it looks similar. It's at the center of whatever system you are in.

One piece of Celtic and other Euro-pagan belief that was copied directly into Christianity on the emotional level (because people would not stand for it's elimination as a yearly ritual catharsis) is the solar savior myth, which involves a yearly sacrifice to bring the sun back and a resurrection in the Spring and the anointing of a new harvest king.
