Ukraine means "borderlands" in both Russian and Polish. Ukraine of 1917-20 was the Malorussian area, the original Ukraine. Malorussia of the Russian Empire was the center of area around Kiev without any borders on the Black Sea. It was similar in size to Belorossia of today. The name "Ukraine" (Borderlands) was adopted so more land could be taken around the borders of it. Malorussia the original or "little Russia" name for the territory would not be a good name for it to expand its borders. In 1917-20, only the Malorussian area was Ukraine. Southern part on the Black Sea was still part of Russia. There was large Donetsk Republic in East. Ironically, there is a Donetsk republic again today. Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible in one of his edicts said: "send all the mad and defective to Ukraine, that’s a proper place for those fools." Slobozhanschina (Kharkov region) was part of the Russian Empire long before Ukrainian Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky begged Russian tsar to accept Ukraine (a small area around Kiev, about 1/5th of the current monstrosity). Tsar was in doubt for seven years, after which he tried to share responsibility and called an assembly of citizens to decide. Novorossia (from the East to Odessa) was captured by the Russian Empire from the Ottoman Empire. Every city in that territory was founded by Russian tsars. Crimea was captured by the Russian Empire from Ottoman-allied sultans separately. Current Ukraine was created by Lenin and expanded by Stalin (added Western Ukraine and trans-Carpathian region in 1939) and Khrushchev (added Crimea in 1954). Created by criminals for criminals. That explains current situation better than anything.

OPEC, Russia agree to slash oil output despite Trump pressure

OPEC and its Russia-led allies agreed today to cut oil production by more than the market had expected despite pressure from US President Donald Trump to reduce the price of crude.

Oil prices jumped about 5% to more than $63 a barrel this afternoon as the combined cut of 1.2 million bpd was larger than the minimum 1 million bpd that the market had expected.

Ukraine warns Russia of naval deployment

Ukraine's defence ministry has warned Russia it intends to soon send navy ships through the Kerch Strait where Russia fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels two weeks ago.

The announcement sets up another possible flashpoint in the long-simmering conflict between the two countries that erupted in 2014 with Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
