Cascadia’s Locked Fault Means Massive Earthquake Is Due in Pacific Northwest
The Cascadia fault in the Pacific Northwest is locked up, meaning that a massive megathrust earthquake could occur at any time, seismologists are warning.

“It’s impossible to know exactly when the next Cascadia earthquake will occur,” said Evelyn Roeloffs of the U.S. Geological Survey, speaking last year on the 313th anniversary of a massive quake that hit in 1700—the last major one in the region. “We can’t be sure that it won’t be tomorrow, and we shouldn’t make the mistake of assuming we have decades to prepare.”

The tectonic plates normally glide and rub against each other, but periodically they become wedged together. When the fault quits sliding and becomes “locked” in place, it builds energy until it finally ruptures, relieving hundreds or thousands of years of stored-up stress in seconds, Roeloff said.

Now, earthquake scientists from Canada and the U.S. who monitor seismic activity along the Cascadia coast have concluded that the dangerous fault line is fully locked, which carries serious implications for an earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.

In North America, this is the BIG doom that
I feel is most likely.

If I lived between Northern California and Vancouver Island
Canada, I would have a mountain bike with all the luggage
carrying capacity I could bolt on to it.
And I would load it with all the stuff needed to
bicycle my way out of the area.
West is the only direction to go, so I would plan a route
to the west.
The damage this earthquake will do to Portland and
Seattle and surrounding areas is unimaginable.

Scientists used to mistakenly think that the Cascadia subduction zone was not as dangerous as the San Andreas fault, until after some study they understood better the situation.

know they CANNOT and never could.
People who LIVE in the northwest know what "could" happen

It could happen today has been a fact for hundreds of years and may be a fact for hundreds more before it DOES happen.

In the event of the maximum cascadia earthquake,
bicycles and feet are about the only way to travel.
I believe it will be quicker to walk or bike out
to the EAST, what I should have said was head EAST.
East is the only direction to travel.
I was thinking EAST but typed west. So Sorry!
The bridges will be down, but hopefully there will
be someone helping get people across rivers you can't
walk or carry a bike across.

Right.
But Cascadia is a cool doom theory.
WHEN it DOES happen, if its the max possible earthquake, where the entire fault slips or multiple nearby faults slip,
it will be like a 1,200 mile long zipper, taking
8 to 14 minutes to zip from one end to the other.
And the shaking will last for 3 to 5 minutes in any given
area above the fault.

The LAST time Cascadia let one rip in 1700, the tsunami
it produced killed people in Japan!

The Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) is a 1,000 km (620 mi) long dipping fault that stretches from Northern Vancouver Island to Cape Mendocino in northern California.

It separates the Juan de Fuca and North America plates. New Juan de Fuca plate is created offshore along the Juan de Fuca Ridge.
