Can you rehydrate freeze dried meals with cold water instead of warm or hot water?
Did anybody ever try using cold water instead of hot water for FD chicken, eggs, etc, that say to use hot water? If so, how long did it take to soften compared to 5-8 minutes for hot water?

Thanks.

I am sure it would be fine, just double the time before you heat it.

Yes but you have to use dehydrated water.

Not for lack of brains that I ask......going somewhere with no access to hot water. I hate to waste packs experimenting that could be saved for doomer days.

Maybe will just take those instant tuna thingeys.....

Yup, and cold water uses more calories to bring it up to body temp, so it's possible to eat your meal and actually lose weight.

Rate (speed) of re-hydration is critical to the texture and the texture being even throughout the product.

Back in my youth I did a lot of back-packing trips and relied on dehydrated meal packs for meals while on hiking trips. Some days it would rain and make the whole 'lets build a fire to cook' thing a wee bit more difficult if now down right impossible.

In my experience with foods 20 years ago that were dehydrated, the time varies from food to food, but yet you can use cold water (or rain water for that matter) to rehydrate the food - you just have to figure it will take double to triple the amount of time. Watch and see.

If I had it to do over again, I would have 'wasted' product at home and experimented and not wait until in a down-pour with no sterno packs and so much water that nothing would burn to figure out how to make those meals less crunchy.
Sent from my iPhone 12 - because I'm better than you.

It would take more time & you might mess up the texture of the meal...but I'm sure it would be safe to eat.

or ESBIT hexamine heating cubes? It is so easy with a little modern technology to heat water, and the stoves and heat sources are small and light weight.

yes it will take a lot longer, set it in the sun, better yet make a solar oven or at least set it in the sun in a black kettle.

I set my frozen pizza out in the sun today in a black card board box and had hot pizza.
