Sunscreen school policy I need advice I'm pissed
I'm honestly sooo pissed!
My son goes to a small private school in WA, he is in second grade.
I was just informed that the school's policy is "no sunscreen/no play in the sun".
My son is made to stay in a tiny corner of the playground that provides shade for every recess, just because I refuse to put sunscreen on him.
I've already explained that he suffers from eczema and the last year haves and I will not put anything on him. I don't even use soap. Nothing....
First of all our kids are so low on vit D that they need some sun exposure, second we are not on the equator for god's sake, we are in the Northern WA, you can barely get enough sun if you expose your whole naked body to it. The only naked parts on my son are his face, hands and bellow the knees.
This is just retarded.
Don't you hate it when the school tries to be the parent?

This resembles to the T how we were treated during the communism.

I emailed his teacher and that's her reply:
"Yes, you may send your own sunscreen. It needs to have a manufacturer's label showing the SPF. Our licensing policy prohibits us from allowing kids to play in the sun without sunscreen. If you have any further questions, please contact..."

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm in WA State as well. If you're submitting yourself and your son to the school, you're subjecting yourself to all the school policies whether you like them or not.

I'm a big fan of home education. If your child is this young and you're already having troubles with the rules, just consider all the other rules he'll be forced to follow as the years go on.

This isn't much help, I'm sorry, but if they've laid it out for you, there's not much you can do.

On the vitamin D: mushrooms manufacture and store it. They can be used as little vitamin D powerhouses if you expose them to sunlight gills up. Check online for info. As per the school: doctors note and check your rights on discrimination for health reasons where you live. Private or not there are certain rules they have to abide. Good luck :)

tell them they are restraining your son's freedom of movement and segregating him against your express wishes.

That might get their attention.

Doctor's note, maybe too. Tell them they will be directly responsible to ANY damage to him for lack of Vitamin D.

you are not going to back down.

if you do, they will never take you or another parent seriously again.

Best of luck to you. Schools are way too involved in matters that do not concern them.

but in the mean time, supplement their vitamin d3, get a sunbed for home use and obviously never let them burn under it.

Good point I was thinking about that exact thing.
We were not warned about that beforehand. They just slapped it in our faces a few days ago.

fyn

I'll try to get a note from his doctor.

I love and use mushrooms.
My son is very picky eater, he would never eat a mushroom.
I buy dry wild mushrooms of all varieties I could find and with my Vitamix blender I make a flour and use in everything I cook.

The atmosphere is thinner in the northern hemisphere, hence it does not matter how safe you think it is in comparison to other areas.

As for vitamin d levels being low and needing the sun to produce it - well, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes TOPS for the body to produce it from solar exposure. But, with the overall increase in UV rays hitting the surface - those levels will crash anyway as whatever is produced is used up to repair damage. Sunscreen or not, yoru child is not safe in the sun beyond a few minutes. Take it as you will...

I feel your pain OP.

This is nuts. Like 150 years ago, skin cancer was unheard of, and people spent much much more in the sun, often with just a hat.

This might not be of any help in this particular case, but still interesting.

did you know that sunscreen like glass allows the correct wavelenght of light through to the skin to produce vitamin d2. the body has to convert this d2 into d3, which in turn takes up d3. leaving a net loss of d3.

understand?

Because of my exchange of emails with the school I guess, I just received and email that is addressed to ALL families

"Hello Families,

As the sun continues to shine, we want to make sure the kids are protected! Licensing requires us to apply sunscreen on students when they are in the sun. Without sunscreen, students will be restricted to playing in the shade. We use the Health Department recommended Coppertone Waterbabies or Coppertone Kids on all exposed skin. If you prefer to use a different sunscreen, please send it to school. It must be a sunscreen with a manufacturer's label showing the SPF.

Thank You,

... Staff"

Empty out a bottle of sunscreen. Make your own mixture of substances that you feel are safe for your child. Place mixture in the bottle. Send that shit to school with your child. Don't make it complicated.

Yes, it's the sun, not the 1300+ atomic bombs we have blown in the atmosphere.

Same with lungcancer. People smoked a lot more back in the 40's, so we should have seen the peak-lung-cancer long time ago.
Well.. we have not, it's still peaking, and their assumptions are just wrong.

Do the kids get to use their own sun-screen? If so, I'd buy a bottle of sunscreen, dump it out, and replace it with aloe lotion or something. Then, he can be slathered with the lotion, and no one is the wiser.

If each kid doesn't get their own sunscreen, I'd invent some allergy or something and say the kid needs his own special (medical, organic, whatever) sunscreen that you will be happy to provide. Once again, he gets slathered with something that's not sunscreen, and no one is the wiser.

A funny side note...I understand that now, a lack of Vitamin D is becoming a bigger health threat than the threat of skin cancer.

We live in crazy times.
