Tropical-storm force winds extend 405 miles from the eye of the storm and cover an area about 700 miles across, Jack Bevan, a hurricane specialist at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, said in a telephone interview today. ``The danger associated with a storm this large is that it gives a lot of wind to develop large waves,'' Bevan said. ``It's a distinct threat to maritime interests.''
