According to Pew, 59 percent of millennials think they are self-absorbed. Though that may be true in this age of social media narcissism, just how self-absorbed are millennials? Research has shown that some 53 percent of young Americans aged 18 to 29 are using the photo-sharing site Instagram more than any other generation. A 2014 study asked users to complete a Narcissistic Personality Inventory and found that narcissism was the primary driver of social media updates.

Nearly half of the millennials polled also described themselves as wasteful, while 43 percent said they're greedy, and 31 percent said their generation is cynical.

It could also have to do with the fact millennials are three times more likely to be obese when compared to other age groups. This is because of increased screen time, lack of regular, leisure-time physical activity, and a longer time spent in education and transitioning to adulthood.

I'm an old Millennial (born in 86). I have seen many of my friends work from the bottom of their companies to leading positions. I also see potential in many of the younger millennials.

Millennials were the first generation to experience the internet from youth, the first generation to be able to understand the lies and deceit of governmental powers in their teens/20's. And yet, Millennials are viewed as horrible, stupid, moronic, useless, etc., by those of the previous generations.

This, coupled with foolish and vapid or vacant parenting, has lead the Millennial generation to a position that it must think and act for itself. You can keep talking down to Millennials, but there's not going to be any effect. Millennials learned from Xers that a direct battle against social injustice/government/corporate slavery will never work. What the Millennials plan is to gain enough monetary backing and power to infiltrate and reform these systems to be better, more humane, and less corrupt.

And we do it in secret, because we don't and can't trust anyone.

I realize, as an old Millennial, that there are many in the younger group who are fairly useless and entitled. But from my own experience, that feeling and outlook dwindles in the late 20's/early 30's (just as it does in every group of humanity), and generally leads to high productivity. The true issue here is that you people are not and were not ever in a position to take responsibility for Millennials, and thus they/we had to find our own paths through life.

Perhaps hate isn't the answer. Perhaps if you tried to understand, looked back in time at what we grew up in, at what we're living in now, you could understand.

The Millennials are post-postmodern, taking the pathway of destroying that which does not work through mockery and hive-mind tactics. What we seek to change is not the world, but the people within it. And we are doing it every day, but you don't see it. Because you're blinded by the ideals of your youth, which are slowly falling apart in your hands.

Trust your children/grandchildren, and help them grow. You treat Millennials like a group of kids, but we're getting older, wiser, and richer. Share with us the possibilities, things that we can do to protect and save ourselves. Try communicating with Millennials as if they were adults, because we are, and we're sick of being treated like morons.

Are there stupid Millennials? Of course! And they are the most visible, most vocal group, because they never got the memo. The rest of us are working toward a new world, and we won't ever stop working, not until our societies fall apart so that we may rebuild them.

It seems to me, in your old age, that you've forgotten what it was like to be young. You expect too much without taking the time to consider the huge changes in the world. And the reason Millennials are so angry and filled with hatred is because we never got a break, never got the chance to change anything, because we're just too young and stupid. The ideas spewed throughout this thread are the reasons Millennials act the way they do. So look in the mirror and face yourselves, because your disbelief and unwillingness to listen are the cause for these Millennials you despise so deeply.

I didn't inherit that much, but I don't blame my parents for not having more stuff. When you realize your future is in your hands and life is what you make of it. You realize that any impoverishment you suffer is your fault; not your parents. Get a job or shut up!

You do know that's not what the poster was talking about, right? The poster was talking about the inheritance of a well-functioning society where every human born isn't born with 1.5 million worth of debt. A society where there are jobs to have, where there are career options, not just higher debts. That is why, if you do a little Googling, you'll learn that the main goal of Millennials is to pay off their debts and never again go into debt, something we learned early on.

in no way do i consider myself one, i've held a job since i was 17, never been on welfare, only lived at my dads briefly when i was 25, after legal issues loss of job, but bounced back within a year

1981 was a good deal away from that time period

I completely agree, as an early Millennial myself. I worked since I was 17, lived on my own and paid my own way. In my opinion there should be a secondary generation between X and Millennial to encompass the 80's kids, who grew up traditionally and then pioneered the current digital age. Sadly, 80's kids are a lost generation, stuck somewhere between the rebellion of GenX and the condemnation of GenY/Millennials.

Not everyone can be a wizard, you know. Up until 2010 the only people using computers/the internet were, for the most part, "nerds." Now they're teaching kids programming languages in Kindergarten, and computer skills/the internet are seen as a necessity rather than a passing trend.

Millenials are the generation to rebel against their system, because GenX did nothing at all tochange the baby boomers system. Every generation needs a bit of rebellion and renewal to wear off the anger that builds up in any society by time.
Because Genx did nothing, the Millenials will tear this sytem apart, so that we would never recognise it again.
Baby boomers world, which is socialist in europe and right-winged in the US will completely change to an opposite.
Europe is losing it´s social bonds, while the US is going to taste socialism in an unimaginable amount.
