Living right in the middle of Georgia for 42 years, I can say that I'm kind of over the whole rebel yell, them and us, if the south would have won we have it made, only good Yankee is dead Yankee redneck mindset. The south lost.

It doesn't, what matters is to make sure history is remembered, not to aspire to resurrect it and repeat it. Education can do a lot to solve our problems, so people aren't offended at every turn. With education comes enlightenment. Though you can't teach mental illness away. The young man that took those people's lives had a twisted mind, something the Confederate Flag had zero to do with. He attached himself to "it", not the other way around. I see the flag on one side of the coin, as a symbol of a period of time that's romanticized, yet one that can never exist again. On the other side, a symbol saying, get some, make me, over my dead body and a pile of other southern good old boy stereo/archetypes. All which are negative. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of where I'm from. I just know the history behind it.
Makes me wonder what the schools are teaching kids, like evolution. Evolution teaches that species evolve to better cope with their surrounding world.. White people are the newest latest greatest version of the human yet! As whites evolved last. Sorry just musing. Though that thought could have been in his head... Yes, American Culture is a mess all the way around.
Much like the terms people used for the Japanese in WWII right up to N word, the Flag will always be there, just not flying on Government property and I'm okay with that.

To breakdown the Civil War to be only about slavery is incredibly ignorant. It dishonors the hundreds of thousands of Americans who lost their lives on both sides. Unfortunately, that's all most Americans think it was about.

You can disagree with the Ideologies of opposing sides that lost wars throughout history while still having respect for the dead. They were human beings who fought for their people. Most of them were not evil. They did what they thought was right. They did their duty. The soldiers and their families made incredible sacrifices. Most of them were pawns and it was politicians and tyrants who were responsible for their failure. We shouldn't celebrate them but their deaths should be respected.

We shouldn't try to erase their lives from our history.

Indian owned slaves

US Grant and Gen Sherman owned slaves and took them with them in battle.

Gen Lee freed his slaves in 1862 which he inherited.

3% of whites had slaves.

before black slaves were English and Irish slaves in the new world.
