Navy STILL pays Microsoft $9 million a year for WINDOWS XP
The U.S. Navy is still using Windows XP -- now 14 years old and defunct -- and it has to pay Microsoft $9 million to keep supporting it.

Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) pulled support for Windows XP last year, and will no longer issue security updates to fix major holes in the software. Companies and agencies that are still running XP have the option of paying Microsoft for continued Windows XP updates, which provide an essential line of defense against hackers.

In a statement, the Navy said it has a plan in place to upgrade its systems to a newer version of Windows. It expects to complete its upgrades by July 12, 2016.

But there's a chance that it could take even longer. That's why the Navy's contract with Microsoft contains options to extend the deal through June 8, 2017. That would raise the amount the Navy will pay for Windows XP support to nearly $31 million.

There's actually nothing wrong with XP itself.

In the short term I could see it being cheaper to pay the $9 million than to upgrade every system running XP.

Other than the money there's nothing wrong with it. XP is capable of doing anything the new OS's are doing. With a few hacks and tweeks it's probably better.

A lot of mundane systems are still xp, most especially software for warehouses and things of that nature.

For such puny tasks xp is a dream. It's simple and all the employees have used it forever.

They could save money by switching to linux. And probably learn a lot more about cyber security whilst they get it up and running as well.

XP is a solid OS. There's plenty of legacy enterprise software that simply does not run as well on a newer OS. It sense to keep what's working.

Actually its not capable.
you can never get windows XP to recognize more than 3.5 GB of RAM. (even though Microsoft post the max is 4Gb. Most often it will recognize 3.25)

There appears to be a disk size limitation when using 32bit windows xp as well.

Dont make excuses and kid yourselves. Face it, the NAVY should be running one of the latest builds of Linux. Or maybe windows 10?

For $9 million dollars you could get XP to recognize just about anything...especially more RAM.
But really that's beside the point.
Apollo 11 only needed 64Kbyte of memory to get to the moon.
It's what you do with what you have that matters and 3GB can go a long way.

I work one a Navy IT contract, the entire Navy was cut over to Win7 years ago but there are a small amount of systems running legacy applications that have yet to be recoded and are not supported yet. Thats the bulk of the XP machines left on the network.

I'm running Xp on this computer and still get security updates through Advanced System Care.

If you download ASC,chose advance setup and uncheck all bloatware. That should be done with any program you install.

Windows lifecycle fact sheet:
Client operating systems - Windows XP
Latest update or service pack - Service Pack 3
End of mainstream support - April 14, 2009
End of extended support - April 8, 2014
Extended support—Microsoft will offer extended support for either a minimum of 5 years from the date of a product's general availability, or for 2 years after the second successor product (two versions later) is released, whichever is longer.
All of the facts are here: [link to windows.microsoft.com]

Actually XP x64 supports 128G of RAM, GPT partitions up to 256TB and 2 multi core processors.

The whole < 4G RAM thing is a limit of all 32 bit operating systems. It's not a XP limitation.

My group still has a few XP machines. They were setup to do a specific job many years ago and they keep plugging along.

It might be cheaper to pay for support vs rewriting an application to run on a different OS.

Why would you expect a company to continue pouring money into an obsolete OS? Any larger organization like the Navy is only still using XP because of legacy software that they refuse to update. Laziness shouldn't be put on the shoulders of M$.
