Mystery of Siberia's 200ft-deep craters solved: Enormous holes were formed by methane eruptions triggered by melting permafrost

Months of research has found the strange holes in the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia are caused by gas eruptions

Years of warming in the permafrost is thought to have caused natural gas to accumulate in underground pockets

This has then erupted to create craters, some of which are up to 60 metres deep, that are now filling with water

Previous theories for the craters, which have appeared overnight, included underground explosions and meteorites
