I am astonished that it would be that high...did you or this person have intensive care emergency and were in a life-threatening situation? You can declare bankruptcy to discharge medical expenses but you have to wait for 7 years to do it again. My family went through this with an insurance company which insured our son. It is often termed "Catastrophic Medical Event" when looking into legal aide. Our family never recovered financially. If the rattlesnake bite happened on private property the person who owns the land may have insurance that could help you...I would check that out. Major bummer, OP. If the sorry sap who got this bill doesn't pay they'll go after him for whatever he owns as well as, if necessary, attach his paycheck. That's how it works here, if you don't have decent insurance. |

"Single payer" with those guys still in control will not get any cheaper---it's just mandatory insurance like we have with Obamacare--with ever increasing rates and deductibles, and government goons making more decisions. Regarding snake bite antivenom--it's about $20K/vial(but the hospital paid less than $2K) and most significant snake bites require 20 or so vials--so I would guess that the episode mentioned was not a real bad bite. 30 years ago, the old horse serum antivenom was more on about the $200/vial range including administration. The horse serum antivenom is still used on dogs and costs about $400 vial retail. Still paying three years later. And that's after they wrote off a bunch of it. I wonder sometimes if I will ever get it paid, but as long as you pay something, they don't seem inclined to sue or anything. . One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one. Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway.
