One in every 20 women in one London borough is believed to have undergone female genital mutilation

As many as one in every 20 women in one London borough is believed to have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM).

A report by City University London and human rights organisation Equality Now estimated that 4.7% of women in Southwark have had the procedure, while one in 10 (10.4%) girls are living there who were born to mothers who have had it.

Outside the capital, the highest estimates were for Manchester, Slough, Bristol, Leicester and Birmingham, where rates range from 1.2 to 1.6%.
