The reason they brawl in the stands and start wars over soccer games is because they are so goddamn boring. I'd want to kill someone too if I was forced to watch that shit.

I appreciate Hockey and Football. Played both in high school. Walked onto football in college. UGA baby. But only played for like two weeks in spring practice when I realized I liked my brain cells

I will say this. Hockey is alot more brutal cardio wise. A hockey shift is the most brutal 1-2 minutes you will experience in your life

I love my Pittsburgh Penguins too. Got Phil Kessel this season
 Quoting: El Penguino

Sometimes I wish that I took sports more seriously in high school. I had a lot of potential but always felt like I was as good as you can get without being good enough. In reality I was just holding myself back so much. I started a band which had a great start but then shit just went downhill after that. Sucks. Oh well.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41690613

That's what it is. Mental block. I think there is alot hidden potential in people who are not willing to learn a sport. Growing up in GA football was life. However after watching Mario Lemiuex and Jagr on tv one time. I fell in love with hockey at that moment

Hope ya get the band back together. Follw your passion AC

Thanks.

No prob

Sometimes ya gotta lose something to find it again. If you miss it to where you have what if's I see that as having a spark. You'll be alright AC

Anything can be appreciated on a deep level including video games. It just depends how passionate you are. I'm really into street fighter and I could tell immediately the insane reads and reactions on what these high level players can do and yet had I shown it to some casual gamer, he'd either be completely lost or grow bored complaining about the hundreds of fireballs on screen.

I'm sure soccer has little nuances that is appreciated without looking at a scoreboard and even boxing without expecting a ko

I am an American. I love America. I know that Americans aren't stupid. So, how do you explain that Americans don't appreciate soccer? I'm thinking it's a mental problem. Though I don't necessarily blame us. Maybe the problem is mass hysteria. Basically the media hypnosis plot line for U.S. involves ignorance of soccer.

Also, don't reply to tell me what word soccer is called in your country. I am an American. We speak American. If American isn't English that's because America is not an English colony. Plus, it's just a word, who cares? I never got mad at a southerner referring to soda as pop. In fact, I find it charming.

You are a ~special nation that has to have it's own ~special sports.

But you are also a ~special nation where bog standard English isn't good enough for you, you have to have your own ~special American version.

It's even in your date system. Logical order isn't good enough for you, you have to have your own ~special month first silliness.

I think it may be something to do with being a very young country in terms of historical and cultural achievements?

Re: Only mental problems can explain Americans inability to appreciate soccer
I love watching NFL games...NCAA football...College basketball...and soccer. For years...I made fun of soccer and soccer fans. Then in 2006...I watched the World Cup in Germany. And for some reason I fell in love with the sport. For some reason I suddenly appreciated the talent it took to play at that level. Unlike football and basketball(where size is a huge advantage)...soccer is a level playing field. You can be 5'6 or 6'6.

Soccer is also played in every country in the world. The ability to rise to the top out of a population of 7 billion people is impressive. Whether it's watching Messi slice through defenders and finish with a delicate chip over the goalie...Ronaldo bend in a 30 yard free kick...or Zlatan volley a laser past a frozen goalie...I'm amazed.

Sure...the games are low scoring for the most part...and many even end in a draw. But that just makes each goal so important. The diving I could definitely do without...but two 45 minute halves with no timeouts is much better than all the timeouts and commercials in football and basketball.

It also gives you a reason to drink beer at 9am on the weekends.

soccer is in fact the correct nickname for it. it separates it from 'rugger', another form of football.

the brits who have a go at you Yanks for saying it are in fact denying their very OWN heritage, which is funny and ironic. lol

the USA are building as a world force in football and with your resources it's surely only a matter of time before you build a team capable of making the semis or even the final of the world cup

Folks, the standard of soccer played in North America is very low. Thats the primary reason its 'boring' on TV.

Because you are watching subpar North American soccer.

Try watching club football from Europe.

Given the choice between a skill player, or a good athlete, the good athlete will get chosen EVERY time in North America. And then you have the athletes brutalizing the skill players (two-footed tackles, coming in from behind, sloppy slide tackles, shoulder barges), the ref thinks it was "hard but clean" and makes no call.

Then the skill players either get injured, or leave the sport, because who wants to dribble if its going to end with your ankle being busted in two?

People HATE being dribbled, and most just don't have the self-control to accept it, without attempting a hard foul on the player who has just beat them.

I agree with this, and had noticed the same myself. It's the American way, it seems. It's dreadful for culture though. Sometimes I feel like America is operated on the principles of Darwinism. Which is great for building robots, but terrible for nurturing geniuses.

Take a look at my karma. No thread I've ever created produced as much negative karma as this one.

This is a conspiracy forum, and even here people are more concerned with sports than economics.

Maybe Caesar was right when he said that bit about using bread and circus to placate the masses. It does seem to work fairly well.

Why don't other countries play American football? Is THAT a mental problem? I don't think so, it's a cultural preferance. American football is war on a field, it's what Americans like. Soccer is dull and no one here takes is seriously, it's what kids do before they're big enough to play football.

I'll tell you how you know soccer is a shitty game...

You watch an entire game without keeping track of the score... then at the end, try and determine who the best team is purely by the play you saw on the field.

In a soccer, game both teams look equally shitty or good no matter how mismatched. One team just freaks a ball into the net one time more than the other.

Shitty basketball is about the same.

Yeah, that's definately right about the MLS being boring. You have a lot of Central and South Americans playing over there, who are used to playing in really hot conditions, and some of them have played in high altitude as well. This means they play at a slow pace, passing the ball around on the ground. Also, many MLS teams, like LA Galaxy, play their home matches in hot weather as well.

The English Premier League is the best in the world, because the players have to keep running around just to stay warm, for the majority of the season, so there's more action.

No. That was a just a dramatic title. Like when HuffPo says, "People are going crazy over..." Or when TheBlaze says, "This person ....-ed and you won't believe what happened next."

Basically, it's one weird old trick that gets people to open a thread.
